Is Magflake used locally as an ice melter?

Try www.harveysalt.com they can ship two 50lbs bags for a little less than $60 including shippings. I get my calcium chrolide and magflake from them. If find people who want to split the order then it is really cheap. Thats what I do is split with a couple of buddies.

I am not sure if it is the same stuff but there is MAG ice melt in 50lb bags all over. Pellets. It's not the same packaging as the harvey salt stuff.

The last Calcium Chloride I used was "Quick Joe" ice melt. Peladow is the one most people.

the Mag ice stuff lists Nacl as the first ingredient so I would not think that I could use it. The second ingredient is MgCl then CaCl. I have 25lbs of mag flake so I am set on that. I am looking for it just so I can adjust the levels a bit when I need to. I am not making Randys 2 part. I would do the harvey salt route if there were more reefers in my neck of the woods. It seems every one lives up north.

I thought MagFlake also was only Calcium Cloride, (?)

I bought Prestone Driveway heat from Walmart Automotive section. Right next to the oils section.

It contains 90%+ calcium Cloride. Been happy with the results!

$6 for each jug.

Wow, I thought this thread was long gone, now it has just lead to alot of confusion. I already have a bag of Dowflake so the CaCl portion is covered. I will just keep looking, haven't found anything yet though. If I find it I will post where I found it.

The stuff sold as Mag Flake is not good. It isn't pure enough. I've never found pure mag chloride anywhere. I'll have to look at Lowes though.

Menard, if what you got is a 50lb bag of prestone driveway heat that's great. Wonder if other HDs have it. Many Ace stores carry 50lb bags of pure calcium chloride too.

Mag flake is not pure enough? I thought that it was OK. What should I be looking for then? I really dont want to buy Mg in a bottle, it gets expensive.

If you are looking for Mg, you can get it as Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) it is plenty soluble and cheap. Sulfate shouldnt be a problem.

Not a good idea to add just epsom salt. Eventually will be bad esp in a small tank. See RHF's many posts on this.

Those bags of ice melt called MAG are what I'm talking about ... they aren't pure, have NACL, potassium, etc.

The harveysalt source is your best bet, I'm afraid. Find someone to split a bag with. I'm set for another year or so...

Which product from Harvey are you talking about? Everything I saw was the MAG brand or variety.
