Turk & Caicos or St. Croix? Looking for input on which is nicer, for diving (myself) and non diver (my wife). Looking to go the end of August for around a week. Anybody been there?

i have been to provo. in the turks and caicos and loved it there. Snorkled right off the beach of the hotel and then the diving was great plenty of reefs around.

I've been to Provo as well, and think that the beach in Grace Bay is the nicest I've seen anywhere in the world. The diving was good, though the best sites are a long boat ride from the hotels in Grace Bay. There is a good place to snorkel near there called Coral Gardens.

Thanks, Ive read some of the dive sites can be an hour ride from Provo. Are there any hotels closer to the better sites? Also what dive operation can you recommend that pretty much lets you do your dive, not the " be back in 30 minutes cause I want to get home for lunch" type shop. Also looking for good hotel recommendation for the wife to have a good time too.

When I was there three years ago, we stayed the Allegro. But I understand that it is no longer open.

We dived with Dive Provo which I liked a lot, though I was a relatively new diver then, so wasn't a good judge of how good a dive operator was. Dives didn't seem cut short, but my air consumption was lousy. I do remember that they handled your gear for the week, rinsing it each day and putting it on the boat for you.

The best dive sites were at the Northwest Point (almost an hour's ride from Grace Bay) and West Caicos (an hour and a half away). I don't know if there are hotels on that side of the island, but if you're trying to make a non-diver happy on this trip, you should probably stay in Grace Bay. One option may be to drive across the island and board a boat closer to the dive sites.

went to turks 2 years ago and stayed at Beaches on Grace Bay. Tho I probably wouldnt stay at that resort again I will definately go back at some point. Grace Bay is amazing. For your wife the Coral Gardens would probably be something she will never forget. It's a full reef you snorkel around right off shore. I saw turtles, rays, cudas, anemomes and tons of corals, fish and the like. I did not dive but did snorkel the a reef on an excursion and saw tons of fish and a few sharks....Also if you go ask around about trips that go off of I think it was Pine Island or Pine Cay...It was amazing white sand that went on forever....snorkel in warm 6ft or less water and theres just millions of white sand dollars on the bottom...It was really cooL! I spend a week sailing in the virgin isles this past march and tho that was great I thought the underwater life was better in turks...Have fun and take pics!!!

I have a friend that just got back from there. He said that the fish life was very good and the coral formations were great. I think that it is a great place to go if you are going with a non diver as well.

I picked up some reading material from the travel agent today and have to look through it.
NowasReef, what didn't you like about your hotel, and did you see any place that you would stay at the next time?

We stayed at the Royal West Indies resort in Provo last year. I really enjoyed the snorkling and diving there. My wife and I went diving with Provo Turtle Divers. Great dive crew. They did not cut us short on any of our dives. If you're adventurous, rent a car and head up to the northwest point for some great snorkling. It's the road represented by the dotted line in the following map. http://www.provo.net/PNetMap.html
Just make sure you rent a 4x4.

Honestly...Beaches was great...it was all inclusive so there were really no worries.....but there were A LOT of kids there and it is even more geared toward kids now. That's about the only problem...other then that it was great and we are looking at going to a Sandals resort next...

Well, just to give an up date we booked the last week in August and we're staying at The Sands Resort. I have 7 dives planned with Caicos Adventures. I research both the hotels and dive shops and it seems that you couldn't go wrong with whoever you chose, everyone raves about the wall diving, I can't wait. Anybody that's been there recommend some good restaurants or places to see while topside?
