Has anyone had trouble with Mag-Drive pumps before?

Krazy

In Memoriam
I woke up this am to a LOUD viberating/humming noise...

Instantly I think my auto top off ran out of water and the maxi jet is making the noise, that wasnt the case... after unplugging and pluggin stuff in, I determined it was my mag 9.5, let me tell ya its pretty loud and its putting out some serious viberations...

Anyways, I ordered a new one and shipped it 2-day..

Just curious if anyone else has had problems with them, the pump is *at least* 1 year old if not older then that, came with my used tank setup.

Also curious as to why it is making a loud hum and producing viberations, I had to take the egg crate out from under it and elevate the pump some by tying it to the stand, its loud still but tolerable until I get a replacement pump, just worrying in the meantime if it will fully crap out on me...

Any suggestions may be helpful and appericate your input :)

Thanks

K,

just a guess, but, i would think that your mag may have been running dry, in which case any particles (sand/ crystals/ etc) would have caused a greater shearing (sandpaper) effect than if it was in water, and therefor may have worn out parts inside causing the fibration.

I have 5 mags going and only once had to replace the insides (propeller, magnet, bushings) for very little money (maybe $10+ dolalrs). It is nice to know that you CAN purchase the replacement parts from pretty much most of the online places (I think I got mine from MD)

Hope this helps and makes sense

I'm surprised I never thought of this... Since you mentioned it, when I first had my tank setup going, I did not have an Auto Top Off unit... I'd come home from work to hear that Mag Drive sucking little water and air... I think you solved my mystery for me..

Your reply helps me VERY much and now makes complete sense to me, My new pump will be here tommorow and once I replace it, I will order the new Propeller, Magnet, and Bushings as you mentioned, I'm glad I can actually still make use of this pump by replacing these items, so now I will have a back-up !!!

Thanks Rainer!!

:D

the problem is the impeller is shot. just replce the impeller and it will be good as new. i replace once a year, plus clean the whole pump in vinager every 4 months

Good idea to clean with vinager, I haven't done my mag for 3 years. Good project for the weekend.

Good point, Nammy,

if I would use vinegar more often, I wouldn't wear out my props so fast - I clean them once a year

I'm gonna have to do the same from here on out !!!

Daniel told me I should be doing this as well, He just started doing it to his skimmer pumps and that the other week... He says it works well :)

K,

I actually leave mine in over night, or for a full 24 hours at times,

Good to know, Dan said the vinegar just melts away coraline and breaks the deposits down very nicely....

Do you use the white distilled vinegar as well Rainer ???

Thanks for your replies :)

K,

yes I do, the cheapest stuff you can get!

I have a container with vinegar with a lid (it will disappear if not lid) which I use more than once - it's not like it's going into a pot of beans with bacon, right:) !

awwwgggggg!! Actually I ordered a bunch of stuff (pump, mag float, test kits) paid $89.99 for the pump but the shipping for the order is free. If I cancel the order I'd have to pay shipping on the other stuff through MD plus shipping on the pump through PS. Probably end up a wash....

Yeah, I check in here every now and then. Nice to see some activity here. Tanks are doing well. I'm still interested in the frag... I was thinking of possibly stopping into the get together at Rainer's if there's room.

Your free shipping on the order will make up for the discount you would have gotten buying it seperate over to petsolutions :)

According to Rainer, He has no problem having more people over as long as we dont overcrowd his house, LOL

Could square up with you there, That would work for me...

If you do end up deciding to come, PM me and remind me about that frag for you, you just wanted some xenia correct ?

Glad to hear the tanks are doing well :)

Brought some Xenia & Anthellia over to Matt @ eddies... Was asking about the replacement parts for the Mag 9.5 and it must have been my lucky day :)

I got a new impeller, new impeller cover and o-ring gasket, Should be good as new now :) (yay! I have a back-up) hehe

Thanks for leading me to this direction Rainer :)

Well I got the wrong impeller... .

I got the impeller for the 9.5 / 9.5a

I have a 9.5 model b....

I got the right impeller cover and o-ring though

How do you know if the impeller is shot? Nothing is broken, was excessively dirty/gunky inside though, I cleaned it good with hot water, its a 5 gallon pail now with hot hot water, going to get some vinegar later and gonna run it with that... I could spin the impeller in my hand freely just holding the tip, seems to be fine IMO...

Is this something you'd replace anyways? or consider it after a nice vineagar bath???

$30 bucks with the cover and impeller... only reason I ask.. :p
