Has this hobby GONE NUTS!!!!!

I think it's supply & demand. Newbies love GSP...but there's too much supply, so we give it away. SPS and LPS grow fairly slow in comparison to softies, and there's plenty of demand for corals that are known to keep their color/shape/etc...so the price goes up. There are always plenty of brown huge colonies in the stores...for the same price as a little 1/2" beautiful named frag. When the supply of "insert favorite coral name here" is high, the prices will come down.

To me, I view it like name-brand clothes. There are plenty of people who don't care if it's a name-brand (and you'll find plenty of bargain no-namers out there). But, if you're looking for long-term quality and known reputation...name-brands can help you out there for a little bit more money.

What really gets me are the tiny stubs that some of these people are selling. I would be embarrassed if someone came to my house and I sold a 3/4 to 1 in. frag. I hear people say that they need to trim there colonies and end up selling these tiny little things.

When I sell frags, I like to give folks some value w/ 2 1/2 to 3 inch branching frags, and usually throw in freebies galore.

If you want to get rich, this is not how to do it.

I agree 1000%

I feel if you are buying a quality AQUACULTURED coral that keeps great color and is just an all around nice coral i would expect to pay a higher amount for it, seeing as how the facility that grew this coral had to put in a lot of time and money to produce frags and i respect that and am willing to pay for their efforts..
ORA is a prime example..

BUT I think it is completely ridiculous for some kook to import a colony, chop it up, name is some stupid name and then slap a top dollar price tag on it. Who's to say that imported coral will hold its color or even do well in captivity?

WWC's "somewhere over the rainbow" Milli is a good example of something i would be willing to pay top dollar for(maybe not 250 per frag).. but their mother colony was grown from a tiny frag, the coral does well in captivity and it has exceptional and unique color..

Up here in Canada its not too bad. Like someone already said, the insane prices for SPS have only been for FANTABULOUS aussie colonies. Most everything else is fairly priced although I have seen some people get out of hand with their frag prices.

Chalices just happen to be the coral "du jour". Whether it is efflo's, or oregon torts, or acans, or blue zoos, or you name it, there is always one "hot" coral. It always starts with one person "discovering" it, and then a few people pay a ridiculous amount for it, and start aquaculturing. Then a few more buy it at slightly less than ridiculous amounts, and they start to aquaculture, etc.

Within a couple of years, anyone who WANTS one has it, and there is a glut of supply, and prices fall. I've seen the same cycle repeated over and over on anything that can be easily aqua-cultured.

BTW I think this is a GOOD thing. The fact that people can make money aquaculturing is good for everyone involved. If you want a frag and can't afford it, just wait a while.

Is that so? How did this occur if I may ask...

more to the topic, I think prices are always relative, assuming there are people are willing to pay. It's not what they are worth, it's what you can get for them. I have spent LOTS on corals over the years, but there are some I have walked away from. Just have to collect within your means.

dont have pictures yet, but i just bought a frag from the orignal colony. its quite a stunner

I'd pay 50-60 tops for a frag.
Fish I'd be willing to fork out more, or things that can't be fragged.

Anything beyond that, is totally outrageous.
