Having problems dialing in the Tunze nano skimmer

Hi,

I've had the nano doc for about 2 months now and have yet to successfully dial it in. Without even touching the tank or skimmer, it will vary from overflowing the cup to not even getting bubles a cm into the tube. My water level varies approximately +/- 4mm from the water line on the skimmer, so I think I'm pretty good there. I love the design of the skimmer, but need it to start skimming. Thoughts?

Oh, and I don't think its caused by what I feed. I feed either frozen cyclopeeze, frozen mysis/brine soaked in selcon, or occasionally omega one pellet. I dose ESV B-Ionic.

Thanks.

I added the Nano Doc to my 20 gallon long with 10 gallon sump about 3 weeks ago. The day I added it I overflowed the cup. I dialed it back because I obviously had it turned too high and within a day i had skimmate in the cup! Normally skimmers take a few days to break in but this bad boy just skimmed like no tomorrow. I have since adjusted it to run a little wet but when I empty my cup out every 3 days I have about 100ml of skimmate. My tank has a very light bioload (1 fish) and IMO this skimmer is very straight forward and easy to dial in. If you are overflowing your cup you should turn the level down. But I think your water variance is killing it. My skimmer sits in a constant level of water at the water line on the skimmer. Id recommend trying to get it in a constant water level and see how it does.

Selcon and other amino and HUFA supplements will change surface tension and effect skimmers, this can be a big problem in small tanks with small skimmers, while in a large tank it may just stop skimming or wet skim for a day, the effect is more dramatic. I might cut this out for a while just to rule it out. I think the water level is OK actually, that is not much variance though no variance would be ideal. I might suggest raising the skimmer a half inch and adjusting it from there. The US model pump is stronger than the European version due to the higher Hz frequency and this can cause the foam over with a higher water level. Selcon certainly could aggrevate that. Tweak the setting in very small increments, 1/8- 1/4 turn and wait at least a day before adjusting again. If you continue to have trouble report back and we will take it from there.
