Hawaiian fish biotope

yes I have considered the potters wrasse, but since I will have a trio of potter dwarf angels, I think that I will have that color already. But it is a very pretty fish.

Boy you guy's sure like the tangs, I just don't think the tank is big enough for all of them:)

Yay, picked up my tank today and some more reef saver rock. My welding friend is coming over sometime this week to measure it up for a stand.

Does HI have a sand sifting gobie that would work in this tank. the sand bed will only be about an 1 1/2 deep, but I want to keep it s clean as possible. I really don't like the looks of a BB tank.

thanks

...but since I will have a trio of potter dwarf angels...

Have you had success with Potters?
IME, Potters don't have the best survival record... Even the ones that are eating, will suddenly die a few months later.

Yes my potter's is doing well, have had him for about a year. He is very fat. I feed 2 to 4 times a day, I also keep the tank at 76 to 74 degrees just for him:)

yes convicts need to be 5"+ in order to be collected - which I think is silly since there are millions on babies on the reefs - but I digress!

Instead of a convict, I would do a chevron - more colorful and less feisty as they get bigger. (and you can start with a tiny one)

whitespot puffers are cool puffers but they nip at everything (including other fish) - go for the eyes every time - I would skip all puffers from Hawaii as we only have a few that would work in your system, but get way to big.

the only tang I would do is chevron. Even if you have potters angels, the potters wrasse will give you more depth as it is a free roamer. Once the angels find a nice spot, they very rarely venture outside of that territory. Plus, male potters wrasse are absolutely beautiful.

Maybe a holanthias fuscipinnus ? :)

Awesome looking fish, Sadly a few 000's outside of my budget. :( I will give the potter's wrasse a spot on the list. Do you think, I could do the chevron with a kole and maybe a yellowtail tang.

All you guy's from Hawaii, thanks for your input. What do you think about a pair of Speckled Leaf Fish for this tank? I wanted to do a frogfish but was told they are very hard to feed, so how about these guys instead.

Thanks

If you attempt a Potter's Wrasse, do yourself a favor and find a LFS that has a nice healthy one in stock. Make sure there is no damage to its mouth, and eats prepared foods. They are definitely one of the most difficult Leopard Wrasse so make sure you do your research before attempting one :)

Well, the Hawaiian frogfish that I was looking at, only get around 3 to 4 inches, so most fish would be ok. I was just told that they are hard to get eating. Most of the fish in this system will be 4 inches and up in size so I wasn't to worried about them getting eaten.

The blue and yellow fish is a juvie oval chromis. To bad the adult is not as nice plus they get about 8" or so. Maybe look in to a Blackfin chromis. They school, hardy, hawaiian and attractive. Just keep an eye on the hawaiian frog (if your talking about Tuberosus or Maculatus) because I've had them eat clowns and damsels that were same size as they were. It was unbelievable! I thought it was gonna explode every time! Did you hear they had a hard time eating dead/frozen foods or just eating in general?

Yes< I heard they are hard to get switched over to frozen, and also that they are slow eaters. So if I have to use live food, I think it would be hard to do in a tank this big

So my stand is ordered, should be here in a week or 2. So my next question is, since all the fish will be Hawaiian species, do you think I should go for that type of reef scape. I was wondering if maybe I could maybe do a bunch of the hardcore tough softies I have.

let me know what you think

No Hawaiian fish biotope is complete without one of these:

I hope you've been saving for some time! :)
