Heads up to our Alaskan Photographers

I wouldn't doubt if like the NASA site or one of the space observatory sites don't have times. :D

Usually the best time is between 11Pm and 2AM. Then again around 4 AM for some reason. Can happen at any time really. Just depends how fast it's coming! Supossed to be cloudy here tomorrow night though :(.

It's been so long I hardly remember what they look like live.... Here's one from one of the very few sightings I had last year. The best part about Aurora's now is that it isn't butt cold outside yet. The bad thing is they usually don't fire up 'till REALLY late. Dang job is always getting in the way of doing cool stuff. When I first moved up here I'd drive 3 hours to escape cloud cover and shoot the aurora. http://www.greene-art.com/thumbnail_pages/aurora_thumbnails_large.html

I'm really thinking about driving outside Anchorage tonight and getting some shots.

Where do you recommend, IPT, for good aurora shots? I cant think of anywhere that doesnt have mountains in the way ;) I'd like a nice flat spot, hopefully north.

Man, I have gone as far as Talkeetna on work nights. Even went nearly to Glenallen (didn;t get much sleep that night!). It's a tad early though. It will have to be pretty intense Aurora to be visible over the fading daylight. It could happen, but usually the earliest I've seen them is about mid August. Again, if we really get hit with a good CME they should be visible, but my guess is way after midnight. Problem with going North is it is even brighter up there. Still, this is a great time because you can see the Aurora and the images will usually pick up some of the fading sunset colors too.

Anyway, I've gone lot of place. I've gone to that lake area off the road (where they run the dogs - South Birchwood exit?) by Chugiak High School. Pretty dark and quite back there. If it's not a good show sometimes the trees get in the way. I've gone down the old glen hwy and found spots off the Knik river facing North. If it is a CME and hits with some gusto it is often overhead, or close to it anyway so if you have a fairly clear view N or NE you should get it.

It's become almost comical to me that every time the Paper reports increased Aurora activity it also has a forecast for increasing clouds and rain :). Anyway, this one was from that spot out by Chugiak. ha, ha - LOL - that was taken with a 10D! Man, I still have that body somewhere.

Sweet shot Louis!

Thanks - I can only tell you that seeing this thing take off live has got to still be one of the most amazing sights I've ever seen.

So Recty - able to escape to ever looming cloud cover and lingering daylight?

Nope, I wasnt able to... tired mommy and cranky baby so I stayed home and did my parental duties ;)

Drudge report said the event wasnt even going to be as big as the one that happened in April and I wasnt very impressed by that one, so I didnt think it would be worth staying up for.
