The alk and Ca discussion could be interesting especially now witheverybody going towards ULNS numbers in their tanks. The research seems to be pointing towards lower alk numbers to maintain colors in acros. Something to do with the ultra clean water and super powerful lighting levels we can achieve now. Might generate some interesting discussion, maybe even an argument :uhoh3:, re. orp, light penetration, zozanthelae(sp) bailout and generally unhealthy or weak acroporas.

I'll second that Grant my corals are doing better with slightly lower alk

I've been using for the last year neomarine which is at 7.5 or 8. I want to say there is only one other salt thats lower in alk. I did this thinking my tank was going to be all SPS which is now opposite, now all palys. I went that direction by looking at totm's and individuals who post pics of their awesome sps then seeing what their parameters are.

Dragonbreath, peristaltic pump dosing is every bit as simple as it seems to be. Been doing 3 part with it for years and it's super easy.

While I've read a lot about low alk being better for ULNS systems, I don't like the ULNS look or philosophy. Keeping corals on the brink of starvation is not my idea of fun. I've noticed my corals do better with alk of at least 8.

On the other hand, I am not a fan of high alk systems either. There seem to be a lot of soft coral or polyp systems which run fairly high alk, like 10-12.

I asked coral researcher Dana Riddle if he thought that bright coloration was necessarily a sign that a coral was in prime condition. I mean, if bright coloration is a "sunscreen" type response, then perhaps it means brightly colored corals are well light exposed, not necessarily at the peak of their health. Dana replied that because the coral is spending energy and effort looking so darn fine (to our human eyes), it indicates that that it has sufficient metabolic condition and enough energy to be able to support that, and as such he felt bright colors were an indication of good health.

Ok, so turn that around. What does that say about pale, pastel ULNS corals?

I don't know if I'm honored, or duped that the new guy is now your president? First, thank you Grant, Tom and Bob for getting the club to where its at! Now I don't know if you trust me or set the BAR so high that you know I will fail? As your president, I will do my best in the clubs best interest to keep setting the BAR higher. So the next president that takes over can have that much more pressure and fail (LOL JK not really).

So first thing on the agenda is a proposal to do a group buy on berghia nudibranchs? Don't know if other members have those pesky aiptasia's that can benefit from the group buy? Ron or Bob can you please comment on the proposal? I caught you guys at the end of the discussion so please elaborate on your idea. So if anyone needs these bad boys please chime in on the thread.

Next, would be what would you want to see presented for the next meeting? Its far from now but I'd rather get some ideas rather than last minute. If there's anything! I mean anything that you guys wanted to do in general or want, Fire away! I have no idea and looking to hear from a lot of you for guidance since its the overall club that makes this happen. PM me or post.
