heat wave

Its already 90F outside and its not even noon. The high later today in south bay is expected to be 108F. I don't think I've ever seen bay area got this hot in the last 20+ years.

monitor your tanks closely till this is over.

I hope PGE grid don't get overloaded.

same! I stuck some ice cubes in a bag in the sump.

I'm also leaving for the weekend. Anyone have ideas? can i purchase a fan somewhere locally.

Fans can work wonders. I have 500 gallons in an uninsulated garage and it's over 100 right now. I have a few powerful fans blowing across my water and my temp is at 77 right now. I have also turned my t5s off for today. I expect it to reach 78.5-79 at the worst.

Lights were off yesterday and keeping them off today as well. Can't believe what's going on with this heat we're having.

Does anyone know of cooling fans whose speed is controllable by Apex? Like the GHL fans are for that system? I realize on/off is easily controlled with an outlet, but I'm interested in speed control since they can be loud on full speed.

Also, @scuzy are you controlling yours with Profilux or as stand-alone? If stand-alone, can you manually set the speed? Also I'm not seeing any US vendors.

Anyone know of a bank of fans that has a mount that fits 3/4" glass?

Ghl is not controllable by Apex. I tried to make a 1-10v cable but there is an extra pin that signals the controller to turn on fan that Apex does not have. It's on or off at full speed. The good thing with the ghl they are dead silent at full speed. All Gabe and Vincent about the fans I helped them get theirs.

Yeah not speed variable with temperature, but the GHL fans are not as noisy as the Chinese aquarium fans off amazon. I have the 5 fan model, and was able to keep my tank almost 4 degrees below ambient with the fan alone, leaving lights on, etc.

That said, the cheap Chinese fan was also able to do that, just didn't look as good, and a bit louder.

You cannot use Apex to control fan speed, so I made my own fan controller.

Why would you need adjustable speed. If you need that fan to be on, it needs to be ON. Not half way.

The GHL fans are very quiet at full blast. Move a lot of air. My garage wall creeping up on 89 yesterday but rank stayed below 80.5 all day. Creeped up to 81 when it got too humid inside and there was less evaporation. I'm might have to rig up an exhuast fan if this weather keeps up.

The advantage of having different speeds is that lower speeds are much quieter and more efficient and you don't necessarily need full speed to keep the tank cool. Silent low speed on continuously is better than noisy full speed switching on and off repeatedly if both get the job done. If the fan is silent, then it doesn't really matter because the energy efficiency difference is minimal. The problem is that everyone has a very different subjective opinion of what is "quiet".

Also if a fan is to be installed in the cabinet you may want it on low speed all the time regardless of temp to decrease humidity and then crank up the speed when temps are rising.

Thanks for the positive reviews of the GHL fans, I'll check them out if they fit 3/4" glass.
