Newbe here lurched here for a while.
Well my heater blow up today sending parts all over the place.
Moved all the survivors to qt. double mint twins ( clowns) are doing better, jeff (gob ) half of the blue's bothers ( damsel). Hey my wife names all the fish, snails , crabs.
All of the coral's and the cuc have died.
Question is will the live rock still be good or should I start over. I plan on getting new sand Wednesday starting over .

Tank is 35 hex
Setup for 4 months
20 gallon sump

I have always bought good quality heaters... due to this concern you experienced.

You never know what's in the heater, I would sell all your live rocks and start all over again fresh to save the trouble in the long run.

Wow! This is like the 3rd or 4th in the last 2 weeks! Let me guess stealth pro heater?
Sorry to hear Bout this

Whoa, sorry to hear that. What kind of heater was it? You will want to make sure that the rock doesn't have any broken heater debri on it, and it is a good idea to replace all the sand. When you set up your tank all over again is it possible to put your heater in the sump? Or get a Marineland Stealth Pro heater, they're shatter proof. Good Luck cleaning up the mess. UHGGGGG !!!

the stealth pro can and has blown up.

Huh, by the time I could reply someone said that steath pro s ARE the ones that blow up. That's odd, I have had them on all 5 of my freshwater tanks for about 2 years now with no issues, well one issue, one of my 250 watts on my 125 freshwater community stuck on and marineland asked me for the number on it and sent out a replacement without me even having to send the other one back or anything. Although my saltwater tank I have an Eheim Jager, they are supposedly more reputable, maybe stealth pro's are no good for saltwater !?!?!?

well this sucks i JUST bought a 250 Watt Stealth Pro heater yesterday, I hope that its not going to blow up. UGH I swear first its hearing bad news on Reef Crystals and now this I dont want to be doomed before i get the tank set up.

hey, is it the new ones you guys are saying blow up ( the ones with the light on the top) or the old style ( the ones with no light at all ) ?

This is my second heater, the first one stuck on cooked all fish and corals.
Tank smells like ozone now.
Can I bleach the rock and start the cycle over again?

I have been running stealth pros for about 6 years but after all these blowouts here lately I'm getting a titanium heater. I'm not sire if the ones I have will blow but it will let me sleep alittle better

If everything is dead. I would drain the tank, fill it up with tap water, put about a cup of Clorox in the tank, plain Clorox, no scented stuff, and let the tank run powerheads and all for about 12 hours. This will totally disinfect everything. Once this is done drain the tank again and refill it again with tap water and put in a triple dose of dechlorinater, this will take out the chlorine. Now tear everything down and boil your rock. This sounds extreme but this will let you start over. It will be alot of work however. I would rinse everything off real good and let all of your equipment sit and dry out, drying out is yet another way to ensure that all residue of the clorox is gone. And I wish you good luck, what a freaking nightmare , huh ?

I am using the one without the light on top, been a year now no problems. Make sure you let the heater settle in the tank for at least a few hours before plugging it in, otherwise the difference in temperature could create pressure inside the glass chamber and cause it to blow.

Dont have to dechlorinater as on well water good and bad.
Will do the bleach and change the water a few times.
Thanks for the Impute.

You bring up a very good point GT3, maybe not doing this has contributed to some of these horror stories. I'm not endorsing marineland stealth pro heaters but I have only had ONE stick on and it was the old style (no light) but none have blown. And I have 7 in freshwater right now. Like I said in the above thread, I do not use them in saltwater though, but I've been told that I'm a weirdo, I do things my own way. LOL

These are drastic measures but I have done this. Although it was because of filling a freshwater tank with a garden hose and wiped out everything, still a mystery as to what is was. Could be a chemical in that type of hose or maybe some stagnant water sitting in that hose all winter growing bad bacteria or any number of things but it was stupid of me to not let it flow before filling the tank but we live and we learn. Anyway, I just wanted to tell you that is why I had to do the bleach trick, and it sounds crazy but all bleach is is basically an industrial strength dose of chlorine, just like the water treatment plants do when disinfecting, so it won't have any residual effect after rinsing and let to dry. Man I really feel for ya, this sucks!

The dechlorinator is to get rid of the chlorine from the bleach.

HAHAHAH.....I think everyone on this thread has asked that and we don't know . We are kind of assuming it was a stealth pro .....or wait ....why are we assuming that. I was originally assuming it was a glass el-cheapo, but I don't know for sure.

Point well taking. Will start all over Monday as if new billed. Will change the sump some what to include a ruge.
