i have a 250w Jager heater i just bought 2 weeks ago. i noticed last night that the temp in the tank was 90. my heater was set to 79. i floated an ice pack for an hour and a half to get the temp back down. all day today i had it set at 79 and no problems i had the door open and it was 11 outside. tonight it's climbing again. the heater light is still on and producing heat even though it's set at 71. temp in the tank is 85. is this a malfunction or what. anyone help me in this situation as to what is the problem?

I'd be getting that heater back pronto. Pushing a tank to 90° is getting close to a mass extinction event. Turn off your lights as this may help control the heat build-up.
I had a similar problem, but with an older jager. My temp hit about 88. I replaced the heater with an older one I had kicking around.
I bought a temp monitor that beeps if the temp goes out of range. HOwever, in hindsight, I should problem have bought some sort of controller like the one mentioned above that cuts power to the heater (at least I think it does). More effective.

The controller is the way to go. Why risk your livestock investment on a $20 heater's internal thermometer.

Like all things heaters are not perfect and you will occasionally get a dud, just take it back and ask the store to replace it.

thats just funny, but i agree a temp controller is the way to go. their isn't many if any heaters out there where the internal thermostat will stay dead on
