Heaters and Controllers - Need Recommendations

Yes the ranco will run fans.
I have them running the fans on my reef tank and my seahorse tank. They keep the temps very steady. I dont need heaters or a chiller-just use a heater once in awhile to warm up the water for a waterchange, but I like the Ebo-Jager heaters. Pyrex is tough stuff!

Hi,

Does anybody know if the Dual stage Ranco has the capability of controlling a fan to kick on at lets say 80 degrees and kick off at 79.5 degrees and if the temp drops to 79 degrees it will kick the heater on and turn the heater off at 79.3. I know that this is a little crazy, just wondering if the controller has the high and low set points for each stage.

Thanks,

dberlin -- i can't read the righting but will it do what mozdaman wants it to do at 1 deg. increments??

with the dual controller::::

fan kicks on at 81 deg off at 80 deg

then could you set the heater to kick on at 80 deg. or would you have to set it to kick on at 79 deg. ?

thanks for the help!!! just want to know what to expect from it... lisa

I love my Reefkeeper controller. Throw the X-10s away and control everything and anything with a simple $219 digital display unit from Digital Aquatics.

8 separate channels you can configure for lights, a chiller, heaters, powerheads, pumps, etc. I'd be lost without it.

Im glad to hear some good reviews on the reefkeeper. I found a heck of a deal on a used one tonight, and I cant wait to get it on the tank. I wish they would have added a moon phase controller, but I guess you cant have it all...

Yes it will- set the controller to turn on at 81 and set the differential to 1 degree so it will turn off at 80. Then set your heater- I would probably set it to go on at 79 and off at 80

cateyes, thanks for the bump so I can regain the thread I started!

Ok, so RANCO is the controller of choice.

Now, which (brand) heaters should I get? - keep in mind sump is 12" wide, so this will be the longest heater I can put in there.

Thanks for the tip on the Ranco controller! I just ordered one from DIYReef. Hopefully it doesn't take too long to come up here to Canada.

Don't mess with the Hydor heates (both of mine are horrible as far as the temperature setting vs the actual temp. Only 10 or so degrees off.

I would recommend Ebo-Jager heaters..I've had good luck with them so far.

Very Agreed. The Hydor heaters in my tank are set to 72F. One of the reasons I ordered a controller!

no problem besl,, this thread is helping me alot also!!!

as far as heaters go.. i've used Hagen Tronic heaters for 7+ years without any problems, but i need to order a hew heater for my 29 and i'm i just ordered the Finnex titanium heater for it.....

good luck with whatever you decide.... lisa

Codeman00,,, you have pm...:)

So a reefkeeper can take the place of a dual temperature controller and all of the lighting timers? That does sound like a good way to go. By the time I buy a dual temp controller and a bunch of timers, I'll spend just as much I think. Can I run two heaters off one channel and two lights of another channel?

I second the Ebo Jager heaters - I have had several of those and they seem to be top quality heaters.

I also have a Won Bros. Pro II digital. I never had a problem with it on my FW tanks, but now I'm scared to use it after reading all of the bad reviews!

rdmpe, the RK can take place of a dual temperature controller and all the lighting timers..and if you change your mind, you can always reconfigure any channel to change to whatever type of device you want to run on it. I realized the same thing...it was going to cost me just as much to buy a powerstrip and all the timers and controllers..might as well have it hooked up to one controller.

You might want to check out the Aquacontroller Jr too during your research..its got some positive reviews as well.

Well, I picked up a slightly used RK for 175 shipped.
I also saw that someone had their lights on a temperature controlled channel so that they would cut off if the temp got high. Can a channel be controlled by temperature AND time?
