heaters

time to buy some new heaters.
its a 75gal tank with a 35-40gal sump, but im not concerned really with the wattage. I want to ask your opinions of brands. What are some go0d, dependable heaters out there?

I like Ebo jagers also just bought a couple visitherm stealth and they seem like solid, build wise

I used to like Jagers, but after a mishap with one last week, I think I'll stick with either Visi Therm or Stealth heaters in the future. One year old Jager stuck on in my prop tank, water temp was 96 degrees when I found it! Over $600 worth of livestock gone. JMO

is it normal for the temp gauge on the heaters is set to a higher temp than what they are keeping the tank at?

basically, I have 1 200watt visi-therm, 1 200watt ebo, and 1 200watt Won. They are all set around the 80-82 degree range but the tank is at 79 degrees

With the Visi Therm and Won you can't adjust the thermostat, you can with a Jager. They are all factory set but.......

maybe im using the wrong terminology.

whatever the dial on the heater is called that you set to what temp the heater is at is higher on my heaters than what the tank temperature is. And ALL of them have an adjustion knob.

Im getting to0 bad of a temp swing at night. With the new visi-therm in there, in addition to the Won and the Ebo, I got the temp settled out at 79degrees or so.

When I left for work this morning at 630am, the tank temp read 75.7 ......

what can I do to stop these temp swings? I have 600 watts of heaters in my tank, and according to the 5watts per gallon rule, I have more than enough.

Will a controller work to keep the temperature steady? Also, will temp. controllers work with other brand heaters or do you have to buy their elements as well?

I had the same issue, then I bought an AC Jr. Now mine stays steady temp when heating. Cooling the system I use a clip-on fan above my sump and have it controlled by the AC Jr as well. It will creep up a little bit, but not over one degree or so.

An Aquacontroller is a great investment as far as I'm concerned. Matter of fact I am waiting on UPS to deiver my new ACIII for my new tank. Any heater works with the Neptune's, Reefkeeper's, Octopus or Proflux controllers. I also have a AquaMedic Bio Therm controller, not as accurate but better than nothing. Also look into a Ranco, people swear by them.

I'd like to add that since most tanks needing heaters tend to need them at night, one suggestion would be to put them on a timer; so if/when they do go out and get stuck "on" you could possibly reduce your chances of loosing livestock.

I like the biotherm w/controller from AquaMedic. I use the 1000w on my 500g system, works great.
