Hello Again

It's been a few years but I thought I would drop a line to OMAS and say hello. Not sure if any of you remember me but I remember you guys!! I lost my 90 gallon reef during that ice storm and subsequest power outage a few years ago and got out of the hobby on a bad note. Lately, I have been thinking about getting back into it on a smaller scale, so I figured this would be the best place to start as I begin to research the latest technologies and techniques. Soooo, hello!!!

Hey nate good to hear from you.We are always glad to hear from people that were once club members and fellow reef addicts!

Thanks Guys. Good to hear from you too.

Soooooo, anyone using LED lighting? Seems like alot of benefit after the initial sticker shock. Anyone having any issues?

I have built several DIY dimmable led fixtures that have turned out awesome but you need to be pretty handy to be able to handle it. Also installed a full aqua illumination setup with controller for a friend that was brighter and had more par than his old MH setup but those AI pendants are still pretty pricey but worth it if you got the dough! So far the cheaper units have not faired well in my test runs.

Gotta agree with JJ come out and check out Jasons tank and come up with your own conclussion on led's! I have seen bad and good reviews on them in the last 5 to 6 years since they have been on the market? Me personally I am still a t-5 or halide guy(tried and true and proven performance!!). I have had a couple of serious reef keepers in the last 2 years purchase top of the line led's to sell them within 4 to 8 months of having them due to no growth or no color on there corals with them ? I do have 2 customers using them as we speak that are happy with there performance,so it is a great issue for our club to discuss and do research on !! This is just my opinion and is in no way the gospel so I am not trying to p##s off any harcore led people. Hope to see you there.

You guys should start doing a live web broadcast of your meetings ;) ya know, help us lazy people out who dont' drive to tulsa often. :)

Well I'm not speculating like some. I personally know of several gorgoeus SPS tanks that have LED's. LED's are like any other type of lighting in the fact that there are crappy T5 fixtures and crappy Halide fixture it all depends on the components inside the fixture especially in LED's where the actual LED itself and the driver are very important to its performance. I went to a talk at crase where the speaker said that LED's will be the only lighting used by the time are kids have kids and they likey wont even know what an incandescent bulb is. Just do your research and talk to other reefers who have the same goals as you with their lighting requirements and see if their meeting their needs.

After all the posts on this thread it looks like it will be a great topic for our meeting.
Hope to see you guys there !

You all are always welcome to come to our meetings.

yeah but i'm lazy and dont' come to tulsa often lol. Next time we do plan a trip that way we'll have to make sure it coincides with a meeting day :) At least we all have RC together ;)

Hey Nate. I have gotten a few of our customers on LED's and also my sister in law. For the most part when the fixtures are working right I LOVE them. It's still a newer technology and a lot of people are DIYer's and also the distributors are not going to get bulb sales once they sell a LED fixture so I don't think they are growing in the hobby the way the should but they ARE the future of lighing. Good to see you. :wavehand:
