Hello, hello, hello, is there anybody in there ???

The new system in Nitro is a big ole tank for sure, definitely gonna be a task to work in the lower portion.

A little bit about my system... I've had some sort of salt system up almost continually since 2008 with varied levels of success, but only started the process in motion for this one in November.

Im hoping to pool my experiences from the last few years into this setup which will be almost entirely SPS/Clam, with likely a few Acans or really special LPS that particularly catch my eye.

I originally intended on setting up a 48x24 120 gallon, however after buying/selling/remodeling a few properties I fell in love with a house that had a perfect spot to accommodate a 36x36x27 150 Gallon Deep Dimension tank, from this point it was off to the races.

I started out with dry rock nearly a year ago, and after a light acid bath I let it cure for around 4 months with no light but regular feedings and monthly 100% water changes.

After I got the tank/stand in place around January I built the sump and got all my plumbing glued together and leak tested, the rock made the jump into the actual tank along with Tropic Eden sand and a load of water I had already made up... I am using the corner overflow in a Herbie style siphon setup with the return run over the back powered by an Eheim 1262.

Everything is controlled by an Apex Lite.

Lighting is handled by an ATI 10x39 Powermodule, hung from a pair of arms I fabricated with a bunch of random parts from Home Depot.

In tank circulation consists of four Tunze power heads, with the bulk of the work being done by a pair of 6095's on a 7095 Controller.

Nutrient management is also quite simple, a SRO XP2000int handles the skimming while a pair of reactors house GFO and Carbon, and a Bubble Magus doser adds organic carbon in the form of vinegar periodically throughout the day. Today my tests read 0ppm Nitrate, and 0.04ppm Phosphate.

Ca/Alk/Mg are also very simple, with the Calcium and Alkalinity in the forms of Calcium Chloride and Sodium Carbonate being periodically added via the aforementioned Bubble Magus doser. Magnesium is added whenever I get bored and feel like doing something. Calcium is maintained at 420ppm, Alkalinity at 8.5DKH, and Magnesium at 1400.

Stocking is coming along fairly well thus far, with a pair of ORA Ocellaris clowns, an ORA Yellow Assessor, a Linespot Flasher Wrasse, a Foxface Lo, and a Wheeler's Shrimp Goby for the fish.

I've got a very large/diverse cleanup crew to help handle the bioload: Nassarius, Florida Cerith, and Dwarf Cerith snails; Blue, red, and thin legged hermit crabs; emerald crabs; and a single Scarlet cleaner shrimp.

Corals consist of about 10 Acro frags, half a dozen other SPS pieces, and a few leftover straggler LPS and Zoas that need rehomed. The Across just arrived about a week ago, so I'm not sure how they will fare, but my Stylo/Montis/Birdsnests have all put on extremely good growth in just a couple months, so I'm feeling cautiously optimistic about their chances of flourishing.

That's about all for now!

Tyler, sounds like you did your homework. The tank sounds awesome !!! I like all of the choices you made for equipment. Post some pics when you can. 3' x 3' that sounds cool. the 27" deep shouldn't be that big a deal with mainly SPS up high. I had a 220 that was29" tall, tuff to do much with if you aren't in the NBA. Here's a few new pics of my little 75.

I'll try and get some decent pictures up, it's really nothing to look at right now, a dozen frags on a frag rack and a few randoms scattered about.

Have a little bit of "New Tank Syndrome" algae, but I think it's pretty well ran the course and is stable if not going away. Haven't had a single drop of Cyano which is amazing. The rock, being acid bathed and dry, was very white/sterile looking but the coralline is starting to really take off.

Tyler, very nice indeed !!! So where did you get your frags from ??? I have bought from 2 different people here on RC that really treated my right. LMK if you'd like their RC names. Also where'd you get the frag rack ??? That would be nice. I set them in the sand at first. But with that you could move them all up together.

Thanks folks, couldn't do it without the support of both the local and Internet communities!

The batch of frags I received last week actually came from a Live Sale on a different forum that Reef Raft USA put on. While I stayed away from their big name expensive frags, I feel like I made out well what what ended up being around $25 per reasonably sized frag. Some of the pieces are really cool, unlike any Acros I have ever come across, very exciting stuff if they will cooperate and grow out with the color/growth patterns they show now.

I'm pretty sure I had Phil order the frag rack for me, I know I've seen them on his shelves before. They fit regular frag plugs very well, BUT be warned, they do not accept the stupid ORA plugs.

Killer tank Tyler, looks awesome !!! I'd probably have a 500 gallon tank too, if I could write it off on my taxes for my business. That would be totally cool !!!

Do they still have the big frag room ??? I think it was Ron,,, gave me the tour while I was up there last time. Pretty cool, even had the lights on tracks.

Yes, they still have the coral room in the back. Full of coral. They are switching all the metal halide fixtures over to LEDs.

Are they going with the same ones that are on the big tank ??? How much are thos a pop ??? So what would you say is the average cost of an LPS or SPS frag there ??? What about the average size ??? How many polys on the zoo frags etc,

Looks great Tyler!

I'm still very much in the hobby. I have a 125g display with a 100g sump (~200g total). I have mostly sps with a few lps and acans. Rocks in the display are minimal as majority are in the sump.

When I had a smaller tank, I used to run BRS two-part and vodka. I also experimented with bio pellets. Now, I run a Geo Calcium Reactor fed by Watson-Marlow peristaltic pump that runs 24X7 (from eBay). I also run GAC on a TLF reactor, and GFO when needed.

My skimmer is a ATI PowerCone 250 and the lights are 8x80w T5s on a ATI 60" PowerModule. I'm thinking of switching to LEDs by the end of the year, when it's time to change bulbs.

I use an Apex to monitor the tank and control the heat.

I have several anthias, blue chromis, yellow, and a purple tang. I recently lost a powder blue due to a power outage, and I was out of town.

I used to run reefgizmo.com. I might start blogging again to cover MACNA.

I'm up for a meet!

Ahh MACNA, I'm debating on whether to make the trip down there, I have quite a few friends in that area... A reef nerd's Mecca!

I was wondering if we had anyone else local that is still serious into SPS, I'd love to see some pictures!

I'm still trying to get my coloration back in most of my corals. Lack of nutrients and cheap LEDs have really sit me back. I have gone back to 250's and removed the bio pellets. Things are slowly starting to color back up.

LED's and low nutrients is a recipe for disaster it seems.

Now that my new tank algae is finally mostly gone I'm starting to have to feed a LOT to offset the nutrient stripping from the vinegar dosing... The fish love it though, the rock looks pristinely clean, and I've never seen such dark stinky skimmate.

Well im glad to see some people still posting in here. Ive been gone from wv for quite a while but still remember Curtis and his wild turkey talking smack :D haha

I miss a lot of the people from your area. There was a really good group of aquarists.
heres a video of my tank for anyone interested. Its been up a couple years now.

Ah Matt !!! I knew I 'd pull you out of the woodwork !!! The tank is beautiful, looks awesome, and somehow the music goes well in the video !!! Good to hear from you. So it looks like you are doing ok, that's great !!! I just have a small 75 gal up now about 3 mos. It's coming along ok. Nathan, nice tank. I love all of the variety that you ahve in there. That's how I like to do mine. So why the bowl over the plate ??? Keeping down a war ??? I have a nice one about 4-5" across. Can they eat a small fish ??? I recently lost a small Firefish. I've fed my Fungia some pretty big chunks of meaty squid. So I don't understand why you guys have trouble with the color of the LEDS. I have them and I don't seem to have any problem. I run mine 11" off the surface @ 75% actinic blue 12 hrs and 50% white for 6 hrs. I am thinking of increasing my actinic time to 14 hrs.
