hello, STRS

I'm Byron... I've made a few posts now, so let me introduce myself...

1st: Dave Pirc and I graduated from the same small high school in southern AZ... but I'm probably closer to Dave's dad's age than Dave's, but I'm young at heart...

Moved to this area in 2009 fronm the Bay Area, left coast to right coast (pun?)

Just completed our new home in New Milford, PA. I have a portrait studio in Hallstead, PA.

We previously had a 180gl reef tank -- for 4 yrs, but are still newbies to the hobby. We are now noodling the installation of a 400-500gl system into our new home. We have been tankless since 2006. So far the only thing I have onsite is an Apex (why??)

I am a retired Computer R&D engineer from HP (IBM before that).

We will slowly begin to acquire the stuff for the new system and will likely not have any livestock in it before spring. We haven't even decided if we are going glass or plexi yet. It will likely be a tank in the range of 10ft x 30"-36" x 25" (if it gets much taller than 25" I wont be able to easily reach the bottom).

The tank will set in the theatre and be plumbed to a room behind. It will not be mounted "in-wall" because Renee wants to be able to easily view into the ends of the tank.

The technology has made many advances sinces 2006, I will be looking for thoughts on current on practices since we have been out of the hobby...

thanks in advance for your indugence to our whims...

oh, we are in New Milford, PA; just south of Bgm

Welcome, New Milford's a nice area, and the taxes are much less then Binghamton almost half, good choice :-) Hopefully, since I'm new myself, I might have some frags by the time you get started.

Welcome to the STRS Byron and congrats on the new house. Good call by Renee as I could never understand why people do that being that you loose that whole aspect of the tank. So are you planning a SPS, LPS or mixed Reef?

Welcome to STRS Byron..sounds like a good plan I look forward to hearing more.
Did I understand right that you are considering a custom tank or a standard tank type tank?
Good group of people here

welcome Byron! What types of new technology are you interested in? There is always something new coming down the pipe line. its hard to keep up with the lastest trends

I'm a techie, so I'm always interested in every new techie thing :hmm6:

We're not particulary looking for a custom tank, but we haven't come across any standard tanks in the size range we're looking for... we are open to suggestions.

btw, main reason for a larger tank is that I'm lazy and the larger it is the simpler it is to maintain... we want to look at it, not continually futz with it. I was spending more time with the 180gl that I wanted. This time I want to have it automated as much as possible and then sit back and enjoy it.

Dave,
The coral side is open as to what we eventually do... we want to get it totally stabilized this time and then slowly add in coral...

As I mentioned, we are really still newbies, 4 yrs doesn't make much of an expert -- at least not for us... we only had limited success with coral in the 180gl... this time we will bring it up very slowly....

plan is for tank, sump, refugium... didn't have a refugium before.
