Hello

I figure I would introduce myself. I'm from Spencerport and have had a reef tank running for about 4 months. I've been on this site for about 16-18 months mainly just reading. I came across the upstate section this afternoon and just had to say hi.

My current tank is a 90 gallon with a 30 gallon sump. It consists of some zoas, hammer and torch. It's not a heavily stocked tank because of the coral price at the stores and I am afraid of killing them.

I'm looking for more easy corals, by easy I am referring to something hardy.

I saw some pictures of some purple cap, i believe that is called and I really liked it. Any suggestions?

Welcome. You are going to learn a ton here. I probably would be out of the hobby if it weren't for this forum. I was burning thru fish and corals before I met up with this group. Good luck and keep learning.

Welcome! Have you heard about the frag swap coming up? You can log into fragswapper.com and make a profile of what you are looking for and and if there are people selling stuff you can have them save it for you at the swap. There are a ton of people here that helped me along the way, and a very nice club to belong to.

welcome aboard!

start a thread with some pictures of your tank and a description of what you have and do - the folks here will guide you to success!

enjoy!

Congrats on finding URS :) - and welcome!
I remember how excited I was to find this group a year ago - tons of great information and local people who support each other. If you can't make it to the Buffalo swap, just start a LF (looking for) thread saying you want some cheap hardy frags. People will respond :)

Welcome from a fellow Spencerport reefer!

If you're keeping torch and hammer alive you're doing pretty well, they're not beginner corals. Stuff like monti cap, candy cane, softies are easier. The best corals I've ever owned came from fellow reefers, so just keep an eye out.

I don't add any supplements to my water, I usually only check the salinity and am fairly good about changing my water. I know I should check my other parameters more often, but I usually don't unless it looks like something is not opening. I was told that soft corals were pretty easy to begin with. I went into the Reef Shoppe and bought a Rasta coral (I believe that is what he called it) Sort of an electric green coral. Within a week it started falling apart and eventually died. That was $70 blown and is the reason I am nervous about buying corals. Oh BTW - I'm a new father, my baby girl was born on 1/1/11!

Here are my tank specs.
48" 90 gallon DT
30 gallon long DIY sump
Vortech MP40W - qty 2
Reef Keeper Lite with a few modules
I have a GFO and Carbon reactor that I have not used yet
Metal halides with Phoenix 14K bulbs (very pretty color)
ASM G2 Protein Skimmer

Livestock:
2 Colonies of Torch coral - About the size of a baseball
2 Colonies of Hammer Coral - About fist size
Many Zoas, I don't care much for the fancy names, but I have blue purple and red.
1 Small colony of candies 4-5 heads
I have a small rock of blue clove polyps, maybe 3x1 inches

1x True Percula
1x Green Chromis
1x Tail Spot Blenny - This is my favorite fish3
Snails and a konch(sp)

I've purchased pretty much everything from the reef shoppe and Caribbean Forest except for my light, and my skimmer was a gift given to me out of my realtor's tank when I bought my home.

At the moment, I do not have any pictures ready to upload, but will try to get some ready tonight.

EDIT: I actually had a few pictures on my phone. I took these yesterday while my tank was waking up, so the corals do not look to be open all the way yet. I don't have a full tank picture, but will take one later tonight.

Congrats on the baby (my daughter will be 4 in July and I can still remember the way she looked the first time I saw her)

I live in Hilton so hello neighbor

Tank looks good. On a side note - I have three frags just like the last one you posted except my youngest frag is now 18 years old. - Mark

welcome to the group!

welcome to the group!

strange.

I grew up in Hilton, I live in Spencerport and I started up my first reef aquarium a few months before my son was born 17+ years ago.

I was asked to post a picture of my tank and future plans for my tank. Hopefully you guys can help me out some.

This is the best tank picture that I have at the moment. I am actually pretty happy with what is in there right now (even though there is not much) and am not in any hurry to load it up.

My first priority
I am looking at getting a new stand and canopy. I'm not too handy when it comes to woodworking, so a DIY stand is out of the question. I have been looking at a few stands online and found a couple that I like, but the price is looking to be over $1000 with shipping. Any suggestions?

Secondly
Equipment - I feel most of my equipment is up to par so I am not looking to change much here but I am going to need to buy a retro kit for my MH's to mount in the canopy.

Lastly
Fish and Corals - Learning coral names has been a bit overwhelming. If there were a reference guide by color, it would be a lot easier to pick them out. I am looking for yellow's and purples at the moment. I am going to get a couple more Green Chromis, a mate for my perc and I am leaning towards a yellow tang or a flame angel for the last fish. Opinions here would be appreciated

I think you should be on the lookout for more rock. Typically we figure one to one and a half pounds per gallon. The arrangement you have is very eye appealing, but you could rearrange to hide your overflow if you had more rockwork and the biological advantages are obvious. You are off to a great start and I like the fact that you aren't rushing your livestock, but it might be time to get a fish in there.
