Hello

Well welcome aboard. I hope you find this site helpful. If you have any questions just let us know. What size tank do you have and what do you have in it?

Well my name is Gilbert... we have a 44 gallon tank.... with pretty much not much in it.... my brother and i have been winging it for the past 2 months... currently we have a canister filter running... but i have heard to get rid of it... so we are working on a refugium... see if we can find one that can fit in a tight spot.... currently no skimmer.... we have a damsel that has been in there for about 1.5 months, 3 hermit crabs, 2 snails, 1 pointy snail, we have some sea stars and even though we havent actually seen the full brittle star, we have several inside the rocks...and today we bought a Green Wolf Eel... see how that one goes...

Hey Gilbert, well its a good start, nothing seriously wrong with a canister filter if you keep it clean probably 2wice a week. But skimmer refugium would be way better obviously. And will help with long term success. See if you can post some pics. I know reefcentral gets some getting used to though lol so no rush. you have to upload photos to photobucket.com then copy the direct link html and past on here.

Well the reason that we got a canister filter is because since i am use to fresh water... i figured it was a necessity.... bummer... haha but yea yesterday when we went to petco.. we saw a glass tank 18" by 8" by 10"... and that one would actually fit under the tank inside where the canister filter currently sits.... i am wondering what glue do i need and where do i find glass panes so that i can make a refugium.... which by the way... can someone kindly explain how it one is made? i know its sectioned off... but how do i figure out the spacing between panes?...

sorry for these last 6 posts.... the website required me to have at least 10 post for who knows what.... but i got the 10 posts, so whatever i tried doing and it didnt let me, should be allowed

You can get the glass at Lowes and have it cut there. Just regular window glass will work. You can use the GE Silicone Type 1. Make sure it's the Type 1.

Spacing really depends on the equipment you will have. With an in-sump skimmer you'll need to figure out its footprint and make one section big enough for it. The other sections depend on your design. Simplest design is to just have the water dump on one side of the sump then flow onto the refugium section then to the return pump.

Something like this. Far right side is skimmer section and where the water dumps from the display tank. Middle section is the refugium and the far left section is for the return pump.

OK cool.... i think i have regular glass panes from work actually.... they are green ish and used..... but they used to be the shelves in the cosmetics department... i can easily make that design.... the gap at the bottom of that pane that is not on the bottom is how big? an inch? and ok simmer on far right.... live rock and macro algae in the middle and then return on far left... correct? do i need bio media or something like that in the "zig zag section right after the skimmer?

im not a big believer in a bunch of bio media, good skimmer good maintenance and refugium have always worked for me. not to say some dont help.

on the sump i think the zig zag opening isnt more than half an inch, dont know at what point it matters.

alright cool.... so i can just throw in the skimmer then the live rock and a return pump at the end... sounds easy enough...
