To make a long story short my father was in for a visit and decided to help out out while I was at work and clean one of my tanks (he's had tanks in the past). Anyway, that didn't work out well and he accidentally nuked my tank. It's been a disaster, things are dying left and right. Fortunately I only had two fish, and they seem to be doing fine. Not the same for everything else, however.
Basically everything is dead. Thankfully this wasn't my reef tank but it's still been brutal. All the sea urchins, starfish, scallops, shrimp, crabs, at least 40 of 50-60 snails, and some hermits are all dead. Along with that, nothing other than the fish have been eating. I've been pulling out the dead like never before, and it's even worse because nothing will eat them like what normally happens when something dies so they add even more poison to the tank. The tank is about 3 years old and potentially established. The reason I've posted this, however, is because of my carpet anemone.
Somehow when basically everything else died, it is still alive. It has looked like crap but is hanging in there. The problem now is that it looks really bad. Its curled up, has strings coming out of it, and is turning black and brown in some areas. I've been doing nearly daily 30% water changes with RO water since this happened (Sunday night). I've also added some reef safe AmQuell to help reduce all the ammonia and other things that are surely in the tank. Along with that I've added some stability (bacteria) since I'm sure lots was lost during the nuking. My question is what do I do with my nem? I've already accepted the fact that it will likely die, but I really would love to save it. I've had it for around 8 months. The real reason is because after 8 months, my clown finally took to it out of the blue and I've loved watching the symbiotic relationship. It's also kinda sad watching the clown desperately try to save the nem from dying. Also, if it does die, will the clown be more willing to take to another one? This is my first anemone and it took 7 months for this to happen, I doubt it makes a difference but I'd love for the relationship to continue. Thanks for any help!
