I was at my LFS and they had what looked to be a Favia, not sure but it always caught my eye.Anyways they were going out of business and it was practically the last thing in one of their display tanks so I asked how much? They said I could have it since it was almost dead, but becareful its going to die soon and polute your tank so be warned if I still wanted it.It seemed like it still had some fight in it so I took it and its in a bag in my tank.My first question is what is it?Second is there really no hope or can I still save this freebie?.

These are some really big pictures,so I posted a link to them to help out with the conclusion.

Looks to me like a Favia.

Also looks like you could save it with a little TLC! Good find!

My Favia didn't like it when I moved it up close to the Halides. It now happily resides about 1/2 way between the top and the bottom. Keep your water quality high and you may be able to save it. Keep an eye out for it to extend it's feeding tentacles. You may at that time try and feed it something small, like Cyclopeze.
Good Luck.

What type of lighting do you have?

That picture from LiveAquaria is not the same coral. Look closely and you'll see the that the one pictured by 3S1K has polyps that share a common wall. The one on live aquaria has each polyp with it's own wall.

It will definitely pull through if you provide it with the right care. Just make sure to do plenty of water changes to assure good quality water, run some carbon and position the coral in a good amount of water flow to keep any algae from growing on it.

Best of luck!

Yes mine does share a common wall, will the parts in the middle that are dead eventually grow back?

They won't grow back but the coral will start to grow over them once it becomes healthier.

Thats good to hear,I thought it was similar to Torches and Frogspawn were the head won't grow back once its dead.I got it at the bottom right now with decent flow and a couple of layers of screen to acclimate it to my MH's.I also got some carbon in there aswell.

Is it bad if coralline algea starts to grow on the skeleton?I can see its turning to a shade of green now.

mine died when the green started over taking the skeleton, but that was MY case, two years ago. if the polyps are starting to come out, or getting fleshier, than you may still have a change. mine died cause it was shipped in -20 degree weather, and got lost in transit to International falls MN instead of Bemidji (about 150 miles too far north.) and stayed there over night. I almost cried. it started to come back, but then it suddenly started losing its flesh.

yours still HAS flesh, so I give its prognosis at 50/50. since it wasn't exposed to anything really bad, it has a chance at coming back that mine didn't. the flesh will grow over the algae, or you can take a baby toothbrush and VERY LIGHTLY brush it off. just watch the flesh of the coral for farther degredation.

Well some of the flesh that was already dying is still coming off.But most of were there is flesh is still there and I'm on day 4 with only minimal die off.I hope it makes it:rolleyes:
