Have a Hoven's Wrasse that I'm trying to catch in a reef tank.
Monday he saw me come up to the tank with a net and dove in the sand, He didn't come out until Wednesday AM.
I tried to make a fish trap but so far only caught a crab

Any helpful ideas ??:fish2:

Does he eat like crazy when you feed? Mine always did on the past and this is how I did it.

Using a 1 litter soda bottle cut at the top and flip inside out like all the other fish traps. Then I poke 2 holds in the top and side of the trap, one I insert a suction cup onto the inside of the tank. The other would be at the top big enough to put a eye dropper in. I use the top hole to shoot the food in, and bait the fish in. I then wait for him to go in to eat and boom, done. For a back up I usually cover the entrance with a net immediately in case the fish does find its way out or the trap opens when you pull it out.

Good luck! Let me know if that doesn't make sense.

Nice solution.

The bottle trick can work, but I never, ever had luck getting a halichoeres that way. Mystery or fairy wrasses maybe.

The halichoeres make it easy by burying when they sleep. When you scoop under them, you have a couple seconds (don't do it right after they bury; wait a couple hours) before they wake up and get jumpy, more than enough to get in a bag or whatever transfer you are making. It is far and away the least stressful on the fish to capture in this way.

I had a dottyback that was a bastard! I used a large spice container from Sam's club. Opened the "spoon" side and put food in there. Every fish swam in with no worries but him. I tried and tried he'd swim just a little bit into the container and when I'd move he'd swim out. I invested 4 hours with no luck! What I did was not feed for a week so he got desperate and brave. Tried it again within 5 mins I got him! He swam deep into the container and I was able to quickly pull it out.

Good luck!

Anytime I need to catch a fish I set an alarm for myself. Wake up in the middle of the night. Turn on the fish tank lights and start grabbing. I have about 15 min until they can see the net coming.

Only needed to do it on my 180g reef 1x for ich. My wrasses were the hardest cause they burrowed. I finally figured out where and then made sure to get them out and about before i kicked the lights on.

Again not something I would do on the regular but, it worked and they don't show any negative effects.
