Help Chalices are Melting Away.

Print out the research on Red Bug eradication and take it to the vet. Show them it is legit. If that doesn't work, move on to the next vet.

quick question. Will the pod population come back, or will i need to introduce a few after the treatment later to get a population going. Also, will my snails be ok, or should I pull those guys too? Thanks,

-Mike

soooo... I'm 8 hours into my treatment (3.5x the red bug treatment) and I have found the black bugs that people have mentioned within the living (clearer) flesh near where the skeleton and the flesh start, and they are still moving around. Should I let this sit over night and re-evaluate in the morning, or do a 30% WC now, and do another treatment in a week or so.

I've done Interceptor treatments with the water change and without doing one. It's really your call, but when I treated all my LPS I didn't do the water changes right away ... just my normal weekly ones a few days later.

So how many people ahve treated and had good luck? I know I have and others with no luck. I have yet to figure out what is going on but think it has something to do with temp.

I've treated 3 separate times with luck myself. I just have to quit buying stuff that's bringing it in is all. Just like redbugs, one dip before adding does not kill eggs and you still can get them from a re-hatch!

Okay, I've had this same problem. I bought a chalice off a guy, and within a day of putting it in my tank, it had melted away with the white 'strings'. I fragged it back to almost nothing and quarantined it, but it looks like the damage is done and I have nasties in my system. I'm sold on the Interceptor after reading this thread, but I live in Las Vegas, where they're super strict on drugs because of the idiots on the street. I can't seem to get either of my vets--even the one for my reef-- to approve the prescription. Could someone point me to the canadian websites that don't need the script?

Thanks!

Has anyone tried any of the non prescription de-worming pills? I asked our local veterinarian about getting some interceptor and was denied. I am not having any problems but especially after reading this thread I would like to have a treatment on hand.

Got some Interceptor today, but I have a question, do you dilute the pill in some tank water first or do you just throw the pill in the display tank and let it dissolve?

Thanks Znut, do you know if it will hurt my Softies, my tank is 90% Softies.

But my Chalices are dieing and my acan is not doing well either, all my parameters are in check, just the Chalices and acan not doing well. And those are my favorite corals.

Acans dying

I think this started when I added a bubble coral to the display. It looked healthy for a couple weeks, then closed up and melted away. After that recession started on a Symphyllia and red acan. I removed these to quarantine and have tried all kinds of dips without success. I have had issues with dino's that have receded over the last couple months with nutrient control and water changes. After the dino's receded I had a small outbreak of cyano which was corrected with chemiclean. I did the 20% change after the chemiclean and do 10 gallon changes per week. Other corals in the display looked fine for at least 3-4 weeks until I dicovered the same recession on yet another acan. I am concered about losing more if not all LPS. I am concerned I have introduced this same parasite.

Water parameters:

Salinity 35ppt (Sp gr 1.026)
Alk 9-10
Ca 430
Mg 1300
Nitrate 0
Phosphate 0.008 (d-d/merck kit)
Temp 79-80
pH 8.1-8.2

Corals involved are not next to any others for contact warfare. The red acan has continued to recede in quarantine in the absence of any fish. Sometimes overnight 5mm or more tissue at the edge will disappear leaving white skeleton with a sharp edge and nothing else. Polyps are open with tentacles extended.

I have yet to try Interceptor. I am considering it.

Any help would be appreciated!

Last summer I started losing acans 1 polyp at a time very slowly after adding some jap acans. I had read this thread but kept thinking it was something else because mine died 1 at a time while all my others looked healthy. My colony looked good except the 1 polyp that was receding. Once that polyp died another would start.
I lost quite a few and finally dipped the last one that was receding in interceptor around last November. It worked and that one stopped receding and is still fine today.
None of my others (I have about 20 frags) ever started to recede after that.
I only dipped the 1 frag at the time not all of them.
I dunno if it's a bug really cuz it did'nt spread to the others. You would think a bug would affect all of them but who knows.
I had tried many other dips before that also including iodine and melefix.
It won't hurt them to dip them in interceptor so I'd try it.
What I did was put it in a plastic container and float it in the tank so the temp would stay the same.
I shaved off a little of the pill in the container with tank water and stirred it up good prior to adding the acan.
I dipped it around 4 hours. I repeated this 1 week later.

If I were you I'd also have an LFS check your tank pars to see if they come up with the same numbers.

I had some issues with LPS receding a few months back and traced it to low Magnesium. Once I got my mag above 1400 everything recovered in a matter of a week. I was only down to 1200. I have found that low magnesium can cause all sorts of problems in our tanks, problem is most of us only test for magnesium at WC time.
