Help!Clear thick slime covering everything!

I cant say that clams don't affect it, but it is clearly bacterial. I treated with erethromycen and it all died the next morning. I do believe it has more to do with the fans and some pllutant being introduced via the air.

In essence, I cannot confirm what my jelly like slime was. Could have been bacteria sure (maybe even produced by the clam), but could have been a multitude of other things as well.

The only observable constant is that a single variable was changed. The removal of a clam. Now, the jelly like stuff has not come back. Not necessarily cause and effect but definitely strong correlation (again, only one variable changed).

Now if it does come back without a clam introduced, this observation is likely invalid. If it does not, and others can replicate or substantiate this, it is worthy of hypothesizing...

Saturn, I've kept reefs for so many years and I've had the white slime (it's like snot) three times. Water changes, literally soaking the slime up with paper towels and running carbon cured it. It wasn't until you posted your clam experience that I realized I only had the slime when I had a clam.

If it is bacterial would it cure itself without antiboitics? Or would antibiotics just have clear it up quicker?

Probably depends upon the cause but antibiotics should clear it up quicker depending upon its resistance to the antibiotic type used. Of course, the disadvantage to using antibiotics is that you kill good/helpful bacteria as well which can potentially throw your eco system out of wack. It is generally a last resort measure to use them on a reef system. Also, if antibiotics are over used or not used correctly, they can breed highly resistant super bacteria that are extremely difficult to erradicate.

Kind of curious. I just finished doing a water change and deep cleaning of my tank. My clam has been having slime strand issues coming from the underside of it's shell. I just take a tooth brush and give him a quick scrubbing, but today I pulled a quarter sized glob of the slime pictured in this thread from where he is attached to a piece of live rock. Maybe some clam guys/girls can chime in. My clam is very healthy, as well as my tank. I will keep an eye out and follow along. Thanks!

I skipped the last 4 pages but looks like there is still not a definite id of the clear gel. I have also had a clear gel in my sump and skimmer. Only 1/4" or less thick, I just wiped it out and it went away, I guess I've had it couple times in the last year but only in the sump not DT. Yes I run a fan on the sump for cooling using the ACjr. It's still a mystery!

Hi, Well, I still have slime. Last time I posted I thought it was gone, but it never left completely. It is pretty much on all the liverock, and iglass. The coral takes care of itself mostly, but I have to wipe off the gorgonians sometimes. i have put my anemones back in the tank and they are doing really well.

It is just weird, and I figure that I will just have to live with it. I have never had a clam. My tank parameters are the same as when I first posted in November, only I have raised my calcium to 400. Water changes do not help. Increased or decreased flow does not change anything. At least it is not really getting in the overflows or the skimmer like when I first got it. I'll try to post a picture of what my tank looks like now tomorrow.

The only real disadvantages, are that it looks bad, coraline does not grow under it.

Just an update. I deal wirh the slime as a constant battle, it never completely left. It has never gotten a bad as it was, but if I go two weeks without doing a water change, and I don't feed my fish much, it starts to come back

I don't know where Climax is in MI, but if you are near a college, see if you can touch base with a biology professor. They may be interested enough to help you ID if you can bring them a sample. Saturn, you too.

read that link i posted. I never had this in my tanks and suddenly I have it after I transferred my 10 gallon into my newly set up tank. I added nothing new just more water.

I haven't had it nearly as bad the past few days. I cleaned all the slime out the sump and skimmer and I have had a hang on back filter running to trap the floating slime after I clean it off the walls and rocks. I think removing the air fresheners has helped. The freshly cleaned carpet smell residue is fading and the air fresheners are gone. Im hoping that was my issue.

wow thats stuff. well u have a nutrient or nutrients thats feeding this slime in your tank right?ok maybe you could try a algea turf scrubber? easy to build and cheap look it up on you tube.lots of reefers are using algae turf scrubber.
