HELP! Crosshatch triggerfish dying??

Hi,

I need help. I just bought a pair of crosshatch triggers on thurs. The male was active, and the female has been hiding and wedging into rocks. Recently, the male has begun doing the same thing. Only tonight, he wedge himself into a rock, and his tail has lost a lot of color; not the normal bright red, but now just a dull green. THE SHrimps and crabs are all over him. HE hasnt fed yet, but he looks like he might even be...dead. I can only see his tail, but hes never been wedged this way. May he be deaD??

Thanks

It doesn't sound very hopeful if the shrimps and crabs are all over him. Try and dislodge him from the rocks to see if he is in fact dead.

The crabs are a pretty bad sign. They are VERY good at arriving on the scene of a death. That's what they do and I doubt the trigger would allow crabs to touch him if he were alive. (cleaner shrimp sure...but crabs...no)

I used to have a blue jaw. In the tank was only a picasso trigger and a blue jaw. My blue jaw did the same thing you have described and unfortunately.... yes he was dead.

Hope this is not the same situation for you. Crabs are not a good sign.

Well, I pulled out the fish and my fears were comfirmed. I had to lift a rock off of its head, and unfortunatly this guy must've caused this. I lost another trigger in june....due to it running into a carpet anemone:(. Good news is i got credit for both fish. I have really bad luck with the males, im not sure why. But the good news is that the female i got (or maybe the male...she has a pink and yellow tail??) is still fine, she doesnt seem too upset! I just want to get her healthy and eating, and once established, i may begin to search for a new male (or female!) for him//her. Thanks
