Help! Hairy mushroom takeover

Green hairy mushrooms are taking over my tank. These things multiply really fast and kill any other corals nearby. They're also really hard to remove from the rock without either shredding the shroom or leaving some behind to regrow.

Any tips for removing these bunnies? Am I stuck with removing rocks that have them altogether?

I have the same problem and I peeled as many out as I could by hand, took the rocks out of the tank and used a chisel and hammer to get more of them out, but some I just couldn't. So in order to get my tank back in order I went drastic. I made up some kalk paste and nuked a few at a time. I've still got a few to do, but it's working.
I just turn off all the pumps use a syringe and kalk paste, cover the mushroom with the kalk paste, let it sit for about a 1/2 hour before turning ther pumps back on.
I also turn off the lights, so the other corals will close down before I turn the pumps back on.

you could take the rocks that have them on them out and take to a LFS for credit, then by clean rocks. Or just take as many out as you can by hand. Someone will buy them

I had a mushroom out break myself and the more you cut them or rip them off the rocks the more you get. To get even I took the rock out side and hit it with a pressure washer. They came off so fast I didn't even loose my Coraline algae or any bacteria on the rock.

Don't take any guff from those mushrooms.

PRESSURE WASH IT!!! LOL!!!!

Simply cover the ones you no longer want up with somthing either another rock or plastic egg crate either the shroom with shrivel up to a very small size or if you use the egg crate it will climb the sides as it can no longer expand most fo the time they will start to climb it as they want to find a better place to spread out and once they do pull them off peice of eggcrate and all. trick is trying to get the crate to stay put.

Or and this is alittle extreme but if you have a piece of GSP pop a chunk off and place it directly on the shroom you'll see just how strong a shroom is as it goes to war with the gsp and looses (most of the time).

I am Pro shroom in the end though so if you can get them off or sell the entire rock to somone then do that first no reason to kill them if hyou not have to. Always somone out there that will buy them for cheap to get them off your hands. lol, I would take them and pay the shipping however i have 40 hairy shroom of diffrent shades already.

LOL Why is it that when you are out looking for something, some one else has to many and are trying to kill it off!

Pm me if you are thinking about shipping any out, I will pay for shipping.

I am having a similar problem with my hairy mushrooms taking over. What would happen to the shrooms if they went into the sump with the rock they were on? would they eventually die without light or would they survive and just not reproduce as fast? any thoughts?

If it's a true hairy it would shrivel up to an almost unseen size but most likeyl survive for a long long time. Sooner or later it will die off yes if you want to speed the process up some place the side of rock with shrooms on it intot he sand they will die off with days. Just make sure you rinse of the rock really well before placing back into your aquarium.

Edit:
If there is a large amount of shrooms on the rock snip the heads off then place them into the sand. The bio load of to many shrooms dieing would mess your tank up in an instant. removing the heads and only leaving the foot would reduce that shock dramatically
