Help I think it's Aiptasia!

I me again. SO the new live rock I put in last night. Also seems to be growing what I THINK is aptasia. (I'm trying to get a picture to post but cant catch a good shot of it with my camera. It is a browning purply color with several tentacle looking filled sort of things extending and waving from it there are currently 5 of them in viewable sit eof my 2.5 pound live rock. I think it's aptasia becuase at the store last night I asked the salesman what it was and he said it was bad and killed two of them right there before I even took the rock. SO, what is the best action I should take from here. I heard that Kalkwasser solution is bad in a nano-tank, I also read there is a chemical specifically made to kill this (likely what the man at the store used last night?) and also that peppermint shrimp will eat them. SO far all I have in my tank is live rock (and some small random pieces of zoanthids given by a friend) but was looking forward to adding some clown fish this weekend if all my numbers are right. Can you please advise the best way to deal with this problem quickly and cost effectively?

I use boiling hot water from a syringe. What ever you use, you'll want to put as close to the mouth (center of disk) as possible.

Buy some Aptasia- X if your lfs sells it. It's worked great for me and is all natural but you may have to dose them twice if they are large. And it only costs about $15. Just follow the directions and you will be fine. It's reef safe and won't hurt your corals.

Aptasia X works great. Just be sure to not aply any directly to any corals. I had some "drip" on to a mushroom and it did not make it.

just pull the new live rock you bought last night out of the tank scrub it good with a tooth brush(preferrable not yours or your wife's) and put the rock back into the tank.

Aptasia always reminds me of Don King......what do you think ?

I have aiptasia in two tanks but they don't seem to spread so I'm kind of OK with that. Now I'm starting a fourth tank hopefully nothing directly from the ocean and I'm shooting for no pests.
I use the Red Sea Aiptasia X only for times when I find a BIG one, they don't retract as they do when Joe's Juice/Kalk paste is used.
You may buy two or three peppermint shrimp just in case, they only eat the small ones.

Aptasia X works great and is safe....Peppermint shrimp...good luck with that. I had LOTS of aptasia and got 4 peppermint shrimp and they had absolutely NO interest in them. Unless you just want some...i wouldnt waste your money on them as a means of eating the aptasia.

+1, note I state they eat the small ones only but also forgot to mention that if the shrimp find a source of food, then why bother with the little pesky things?

Don king, now just let a few peppermints loose and see which one comes out with a promoter :D

Edit: +1 on the boiling hot water it's the only process that has somewhat of a success rate.

I have no problem keeping the aptasia population down in my 40 gal tank with Joe's Juice.
However it doesn't do anything to the majaroes. But they look much prettier then the aptasia anyways:D

Thanks for the advise. I ended up using the Aptasia X and SO FAR it seems to have done the trick. ONly problem is, now whenever I see anything in there I can't decide if it is a fan or an aptasia. My boyfriend tried to point out that the fans don't have a center face like the aptasia and I think he's right, but he's a newbie like me. Any comment on that? ALso, I had to buy a new toothbrush this weekend but that was due to an unrelated incident!

...you used your boyfriends !!... I think it fell in the same category as anyone's toot-brush. lol
Aiptasia are also called glass anemones kind of transparent, different shades of brown and some completely translucent due to the lack of light.
Glad the product worked for you, now keep an eye on the rock and if you see one, X'it

One Aptasia is not a big deal take your time. Go to Wal-Mart and buy some pickling lime its cheep and the same thing as kalk. Make a paste and use a syringe. Place the paste on top of the Aptasia, this will burn it out and works every time. Do not cut or pull Aptasia, this will cause it to spread.
Good luck! Jim

If you can take the rock out, the best thing to do is dig into the rock and remove the aiptasia as well as a piece of the rock its on...you know by digging into the rock around it.

Else some kalk paste applied directly to the critter, you could do this out of the nano as well putting the rock back in the tank after you have killed it.
