Help Irritated corals

I just added in a new filter sponge and now almost all lps and mushrooms seem to be very irritated, lots of slime. Any ideas? I washed the sponge for one or two minutes under filtered water then added it to my tank. Also protein skimmer is going ballistic pumping out alot of micro bubbles. is this going to cause long term damage? I just did a 10 gl water change on a 80 gl system when I saw the irritation start

I would love to hear from anyone, I have noticed that my snails area all at the bottom of the tank with their foot closed. My skimmer continues to do nothing but dump out micro bubbles and is filling the entire compartment of the sump with them from top to bottom with them! I have pulled out the sponge that i put in earlier and have done a 10 gl water change its a 80 gl system. anyone, someone, please help I have so much time and effort put into my reef and it seems to be very sick! :mad2:

can anyone tell me why my protein skimmer is dumping milky white water out of the return and not doing one bit of skimming? and this all started when i put a new filter sponge (eshopps 12/2.5) into my tank. some one please i need help worried im going to have coral loss

It really sounds like some kind of contamination. If you're absolutely sure it occurred as a direct result of installing that filter sponge, I'd pull it. Regardless, I'd do a big WC and run carbon.

ADD: you didn't dose any chemi-clean did you? Or have any children that might've squirted some soap or something in the sump?

no kids but i did rinse my sponge in my utility sink that is regularly used to drain laundry discharge. It is also the sink that my filter unit gets its water supply and its drain. When i was rinsing the filter pad I may have accentually grazed the side of the utility sink but i did a lot of rinsing

check parameters to see where it went wrong, not sure if its just the sponge causing it. What is the salinity?

^^^Good idea to measure at least twice a day until this issue is fixed. More than your fish might be dying, in which case you may observe a small ammonia spike. You don't have any equip that could've gone haywire, do you (calcium reactor, kalk reactor)?

Have any sea cucumbers (or a sea apple, etc)? It almost sounds like one crawled into a powerhead and got blended up. I'd also ask if you had a boxfish, but ostracitoxin supposedly isn't poisonous to anything but other fish.

ok update: skimmer is still running like a mad man, no more micro bubbles but not a drop of dry foam in sight totally wet. Also I found that I have no significant loss of life in the tank, all fish except for one are alive and seem to be doing well and most inverts are alive including those snails that had fallen to the bottom last night. Most corals are out but polyp extension sucks and i think i may have lost my sympodium coral. I called eshopps and they say that they do have manufacturer residues that are on the sponge and recommend people wash before use, I will be going a step beyond that and always washing in a light vinegar mix, the basic wash does not seem to be working well with me. I am going to replace a fresh lb of AGC for a new even fresher lb unless someone else recommends other wise or that it would be a total waist. Also I have 20 gl of water sitting and getting ready for another water change later tonight. I will post some pictures as soon as i get them. Thanks all of you for your help with this matter, its good to have so much experience on tap at this forum!

Zachfish I am checking parameters twice a day and no i have no sea cucumbers or the like. I think my problem is isolate to the sponge having some kind of chemical contaminate on it.

currently my parameters are sg 1.024 ca 400 mg 1400, dKH 10.2 ammonia is not there as of last night

:rolleye1:I think your correct in thinking it was some kind of chemical residue from the factory. Probably some kind of machine lubrication. My friend lost all his fish when he did a water change with the same bucket his wife used to wash the floors. Good Luck!!! Whenever you have a problem a water change should help. :twitch:Good thing you caught it in time before losing anything else...
