I have been trying to locate places that sell live cuttlefish to hobbiest for four weeks and I am having no luck. I want to purchase three or four cuttlefish so I can try to get them to breed in a tank. Help

There are no species worth keeping currenty available in the USA to hobbyists.
Sepia.bandensis is the only species available from time to time.Nine out of ten die during shipping for this species so its really not woth it. Some day though.. Some day there might be some captive reared Sepia.O .hehehehe Not for a while though. If you have never kept a ceph your better off getting a octopus first.
Cuttles need a big tank!

cuttlefish

They are so cool I seen one a few days ago at the NY Aquarium. They are one of the smartest animals but can only live to about 8 months old (or so Ive heard) I wouldnt recommend them but liveaquaria.com has them

I called them last week and they told me they have ordered them but they have never had any arrive at the store after they order them. I think they have given up on cuttlefish. :(

A LFS here just recently got one in - not sure why but they are pretty on the ball as far as husbandry goes usually. Possible they are getting them from same place TMC gets them I know one of their wholesalers is located in DFW.

You can call or send em an email if ya like:

It's on my list of things to do but I wanted to set up a long shallow tank for a cuttle - still waiting on getting a chiller as I hear that even the tropical species do somewhat better under 75 deg Farenheit.

Hey techno, what is the DFW wholesaler? I have yet to find one around here. I have worn out the LFS's arund here since most of the cuttles die on arrival.

I just e-mailed the marine center. I'll see what they say. Their phone number indicates they are in my area. Would be nice to just drive and get the cuttefish.

Interesting. Anthony Calfo gave a talk at our local reef club last weekend and he was talking up cuttlefish as much easier to keep than once thought and a great candidate for hobiest breeding. He even said that they don't need a huge tank, although I don't remember any specific size recommendation from him. The only negative he cited was short lifespan. 90 Percent mortality though, if true, is obviously unacceptable.

Here is my reply from the marine center:

Although cuttlefish are occasionally available, we don't deal with them since, as you know, they rarely survive shipping.

Thanks for your inquiry,

Any other places that deal in them?

Response from austinaquariums.com:

We have special ordered cuttlefish many times. They are generic
species, not very specific on the invoice. I can possibly get you one, but they travel very poorly. I would need payment in full and it would be better for you to come and get it, rather than further ship it and risk bad handling. They also do much better in pairs. Let me know if you want to get some. The price is $30 each. They would arrive in Austin on a Monday.

These guys look like a winner, but I would have to drive down there and come back in one day. That is about an 7 hour trip total in one day.
