Help me decide glass v. acrylic

Thinking about upgrading again. I have only owned glass tanks but want to solicit opinions on pros and cons of acrylic. I know it scratches easy but those of you with acrylic tanks please give me your feedback.

I go bare bottom so there is no sand in my tank.

Your thoughts please.

How often do you scrape coralline? My experience with acrylic is you have to be diligent on upkeep or its a giant PITA. The plus to acrylic is it can be buffed. The negative is, you will likely need to buff it.

Personally, I would only own a glass display unless I was going so big acrylic was the only option.

IMO if you are not going to upgrade to atleast a 200+ gallon tank I wouldn't even consider acrylic. Not to mention acrylic has gone through the roof in pricing in the last 2 years.

I have glass and acrylic. If you keep up with the acrylic its not that bad but take a week off and getting the coraline can be an issue. I use a credit card to clean my acrylic. Saying that, if I had to choose I would much rather have glass and be able to CAREFULLY use a razor from time to time, a luxury that isnt an option with acrylic.

I have Acrylic and bare bottom tank. I used to have sand but yanked it after one or two "quick" cleanings cost me with a piece of sand getting under the magnet and causing a deep scratch. The good news is as stated you can buff it out to look like new. You cannot tell it was ever scratched.

You can scratch a glass tank (although a bit harder to do) if you do you can forget about buffing it out.

Plus I like the added security of welded seems vs. silicon... and I don't worry if I accidently drop something that it is going to break my tank bottom.

Acrylic is very clear and easy to take care of with a bare bottom. I have found the plastic blades sold by Kent Marine make cleaning the coraline a snap.

I used to think it was a pain to clean until I found Mighty Magnets! Link below. They have Acrylic safe algae socks and coraline algae dozer pads that fit on your magnets that are a godsend. I no longer worry about going an extra week between cleanings because the harder green algae will start to take hold. The algae pads scrub it right off in one swipe what used to take hours with the Kent scrapers to do.

I used to worry more about the green/brown algae that formed then the coraline. Now I have easy maintenance for both.

I run my regular magnet once a week and stay on the top of the coraline about once a month and then biweekly usually run the dozer to make it all sparkly and shiny...

Razors are not an option... all in all it is 6 to one half dozen to another. It may be nice to have Glass some times and Acrylic others.

You really just have to flip a coin to pick one. IMO There are pros and cons to both. I have both acrylic and glass DT's. They both clean up well. You just have to be more cautious with the acrylic.

Get Starphire glass and be done with it. The only pro to acrylic over Starphire glass is weight, so unless you are hauling it up flights of stairs to its final resting place, go glass. Just as clear, won't scratch, and price is about the same.

Thanks for the input. I will take some advice from Clint Eastwood - " a man has got to know his limitations". Acrylic is probably to easy for me to scratch.
