Also, keep in mind that I'd like to be able to keep at least one large tang (naso most likely) and it will be an SPS dominated reef.

I think it depends on the room your putting it in. There are lots of variables. Wider tanks look awsome for the corals, but longer would be better for your fish. Wider are harder to light. Make a list of pros and cons (everything you can possibly think of) for each dimension. Rate each pro or con on importance to you on a scale of 1 to 10. Then add up the numbers. The highest number will most likely be what you will be happiest with. Thats how I did it.

if this was a choice with a 7 ft or 6 ft and wider I would go with 6 and wider but being 5 or 6 I'd go with 6. IMO,, need 6 for best visual and happier fish.

Thanks everyone for your input. It looks like 6ft long is becoming the more popular choice. I think that's what I'm leaning towards also. Now the question is if 36" is wide enough for me, or should I go for 48". The main reason I wanted to keep it 300gals or less is so I didn't have to upgrade any of my current equipment (except lights of course). But, I may consider doing 72X48 anyway. This is likely the last tank I'm going to buy for a long time, so I might as well go as big as space and money will allow.

6ft at least. If i wasnt budget/space limited my next tank would be 96x36x25, but I am limited so its gonna have to be a 180 or 220 wide.

Personally I think 48" wide is way to big, but it really depends how your tank will be setup/located.
