I am embarking on my first qt experience and at this time just collecting all the necessary equipment and medications necessary to start the QT process. I have been researching quite a bit on qt process but i am having information overload. So QT experts please help.
This tank will be a 50 gallon permanent hospital tank and i just have questions on maintaining this tank for its purpose.
My first question is about QT dosing routine.
1. Dose prophylactically with prazi pro after 5-7 days water change.
2a.Dose cupramine prophylactically for 21 days to reach a level of 0.35-0.4. Test with seachem or salifert testing kit for copper.
2b. Redose prazi pro if needed.
3. After each water change redose cupramine to maintain therapeutic range of 0.35-0.4
4. After 4 weeks then reintroduce to display tank.
My second question is about maintaining the qt tank with no livestock.
1. Do I clean out the tank with carbon to remove all the medication in the tank.
2. Or do i just buy extra sponge filters that were seeded from my display tank to maintain the QT hospital.
3. After determining cleaning the tank, i would feed the tank without fish in order to maintain biological filtration.
My third question is setting up a quick qt tank.
1. Can i use a live rock seeded already and place in the qt tank to setup biological filtration. Of course i will not be adding it back to the display tank.
2. Will the live rock cause false positive or inconsistent copper readings.
Last question is about the other medications per as needed basis for symptoms.
1. I understand that prophylatically dosing with different bacterial medication depends whether or not they are gram positive vs gram negative bacteria.
- Metronidazole for intestinal. What is the dose per mg/gal
- Doxycycline: broad spectrum abx. What is the dose per mg/gal
2. Chloroquine for sensitive fish against copper (angels/butterflies)
- Is the dose 40mg/gal
Thanks everyone for reading my post. I am just as confused now from writing this long post.
Please help me develop good qt husbandry so i can feel confident in being able to fight against infection.
