Help me pick my new sand...

OC CJ

Crushed coral > sand
I've been debating on what to get for the past week and have narrowed it down to these three since they are available locally without shipping. I just can't decide which one I want. I have sugar sized sand now and I'm over it. I want something bigger, just not sure how big. Plus, not sure if I want to go with white anymore.

Let me know which one you like!!! Just reference the numbers below.
I appreciate your opinion guys. The wife is just no help, she likes them all!

All are Caribsea brand.
1. Arag-alive special grade, 1-2mm
2. Dry Flamingo reef sand, 1-2mm
3. Coralite bermuda pink, 2-4mm

I gotta say I'm loving this new forum version and being able to attach photos without a host site!

Keep the opinions coming!!!

Thanks Mike.

Austin, yeah I currently have the Caribsea sugar sized. I have over 100lbs that will hopefully be coming out of the tank this weekend. Let me know if you want to trade something for it.

I should mention I'll going from DSB to a SSB.

Thought I had my mind made up this morning with #1. Kept thinking about it and I think I want some color in my sand. #1 is just pure white and that's all it is. The others have lots of color and can will hide the dirty sand look better because of it.

My wife just had the idea of mixing in a bag of #1 with a few bags of #2. Since #2 has mostly tans and pinks, the white in #1 will make it pop a little more and brighten it up while keeping the colorful look.
What do you guys think of that combo?

Im in the same boat as you. I have the sugar sized sand and even though it looks nice my powerhead blows the sand all over the place. I am getting #1 as well. Also its hard to clean the sand with a gravel vac because the vac sucks both the detrius and the sand out.

Wow, overwhelming for #1 eh? I just wanted thought I would mix it up with something other than plain old white. Still on the fence.

Just make sure, if you get #1 to have marinedepot price match it for you. Premium aquatics sells the exact same bag for $17.99!!

I am definitely interested in the sand. Let me know what you want to trade for it. I took down a tank that was appr. 48"x15" footprint and will be setting up a 48"x24" footprint so I will need more to make up the difference. Let me know!

Of the ones listed I would go with #1... I like WHITE sand... I just think that's what it should look like... JMO

Jose, I remember you had pretty big substrate that wasn't even close to white. I'm kind of liking the idea of going with #2 and mixing in some #1 to brighten it up. Or I could go #1 and mix in some #2 for color.

Ahhh, the choices man!!!

Yea I ran CC and worked well until the coraline algea grew on it dang it! I have treid many different set up and the last and the one I like the best is BB. I have tons of fish and very easy to keep the tank happier on the long run. No matter how you mix it the smaller or finer substrate will eventually end up on the bottom. nless they are the same size and then will even out.

I like the idea of going with a mix of #1 and #2. I think a 50/50 mix would bring a nice touch of color to the sand bed.

Well, I bought 2 bags of #1 and 2 bags of number 2. #1 definitely is not as white as the pic. It's more yellowish. And #2 looks nothing like the picture. It's actually more white than #1 but they got the grain size wrong. It has some pretty big pieces in it, possibly up to 4mm but most is in teh 1-2 range. I really like the way #2 looks.

Oh, and #1 had a "best if used by July 09" freakin sticker on it. How nice, expired sand. I've gotta take it back to exchange it for some "fresh" stuff.
