HELP! PLEASE! my EHEIM 2028 PROFESSIONAL II IS LEAKING SEVERELY!
The filter flooded out maybe 5 gals of water all over the wooden floors! a nightmare! after everything was all hooked up, when power is turned off then as soon as hose valve opens it floods water out of O GASKET /top-bottom gasket! A panic! the water would not stop until I closed hose valve, otherwise I suspect it would empty the whole 76 gals and destroy everything! VERY SERIOUS! Why is it leaking! When running it seemed fine , as soon as power is off= a flood!
The hoses are at full extension upward as it is a tall tank; 36in tall 1/4 cyl. corner tank itself (above wooden stand),outtake pours about 46in above the filter; about 36 inches diff between intake hose bottom(suction) and return hose opening (clean water). Does it have to do with the differences between the two hoses-causing pressure or just back pressure of the water when off- BUT...I would think it should leak in any case...WHAT CAN I DO- PLEASE HELP!
THE FILTER was just bought used on ebay it's 1 year old and the gasket looked good seemed soft enough, but I am not an expert, I tried to add a second homemade rubber gasket and broke 3 clips(new ones will be here in a few days) I even put a little vaseline on gasket as recommended on a site, but it still leaked out from the sides o-ring gasket.
Help! what is going on here- why is it flooding out? antiquebabies@aol.com
THERE HAS TO BE SOME LOGICAL SOLUTION!?
YOUR HELP WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED! thank you VERY MUCH, Kurt

Can I ask you a question?

Was the filter running for a while with no problems and only leaked when you turned it off? I only ask this because I can't quite interpret your post.

Those hoses are supposed to lock closed when you remove them from the cannister. Did you try to remove them from the cannister?

When it leaked, were the hoses still properly attached to the cannister?

It sounds like you are missing a few of the clips that clamp the pump head down on the cannister. Is that correct?
If so - that would probably prevent the cannister from sealing correctly and could easily leak.

I'm not sure I would run a 2028 with broken clips. Or am I missing something?

HELLO MICHAEL,
i just installed the 2028 filter yesterday. I turned it on, had to fill the canister with water then suction the out tube to get it started. It ran ok- BUT then I shut it off - it starts running down the sides (where the o-gasket is between top & bottom)and would not stop! So I quickly disconnected the double hose connector and then it stops - tried reconnecting and BOOM a massive flooding as soon as the hose value opens!
should some return gasket be stopping this reverse water pressure??? any ideas??? thank you, kurt

all the clips were fine and engaged and I checked gasket was soft and seemed ok? I put some vaseline on it a tried agagin to no avail! Does the heights of the hoses and reverse pressure cause this problem? HOW DO I SOLVE THIS PROBLEM??

What Chris said. That is the first thing. Lots of times (I have read - never actually had this prob with mine) but lots of times people don't get the gasket positioned exactly right when they put the thing back together after filling it. I'm not sayin you didn't but it is a fairly common problem.

I would definately not run it until you get new clips. I would go ahead and add a new gasket to the mix while you're at it. In fact you might consider replacing the smaller rubber gaskets inside the filter while you are at it. Couldn't cost another few bucks.

If you have never taken one apart and put it back together, you might have something a little off, maybe too much medium in the trays, or maybe it is not completely together. Do you have the manual? It shows a pic of how it should go back.

One of the basket handles goes under the filter pad, and the other goes on top of the pads....etc.....so you have to do it only one way.

Maybe this might help. You might also post at plantedtank.net cause they are all big eheim 2028 and 2026 users there with tons of advice.

Oh and btw, the pressure from a deep tank should not cause it to leak.
Michael
