Help needed

Ok, I hate to ask or sound like i am asking for pity, however i need to ask for some help. on Nov. 11 2008 I had a house fire and lost our entire house. My family is fine nobody got hurt, however we lost our house. I have great insurance so we will be fine. We have rented a temporary house and our house will soon be rebuilt, however i lost my ENTIRE salt system. I had a 400g display with a 250g fuge and a 200g sump. My tank has been up and running for over 12 years, and have traded MANY corals at the swaps. Anyway i am going to ask for some frags i think in june, i am not asking for them for free, but i would like to buy a bunch of frags at a time. I want to get my tanks running like they were ASAP. I am also going to need all new equipment. My MH's burned up, my VHO's skimmer pumps everything. I lost a TON of fish and corals. My take was just starting to recover from the power outage and then this. So if you have any equipment that can support a 700-1000g system PLEASE let me know. I will be asking for a few cup fulls of different sand to help seed my tank and fuge again, and anyone who has seen my tanks and has any pics of them if you could email me them so i have some sort of a record as we lost everything. AGAIN this is NOT a cry for pity, but i do need some help to return my tanks to what they were. Also i am going to go up to a 500-675 gallon tank this time so if anyone knows where to get on please let me know.

I do have a question to, the glass of my tanks survived, soot covered, but intact. Seeing as the wire in my house melted do you all think copper would be an issue inthe tanks? I think they could be used for fresh water, but not salt do to a possibility of cooper. Any thoughts on this please let me know.

Check your insurance, MAKE SURE they know what your tank is worth, I NEVER thought anything like this would happen to me, and it did so be PREPARED!!

Man that sucks. I may have a few corals and maby some lights to help get ya back on the road.

As far as the copper goes, I doubt very much it would get in your tank. Fill her up and A copper test kit could tell you for sure. On a side note you may want to clean and fill the tank and give it a couple light taps or somthing. I would think the fire could have possibly "tempered" it or made it brittle.

man that stinks about your house and life's collections, pictures , namesakes, everything you ever worked and lived for , to hell with the tank at that point ,,but im glad to see your gonna fire up a mac daddy tank again ,,,you can have a chunk of anything i have when you get up and running again , i have some Purple death and some black/purple/green Darth Vader palys that should be plenty grown out by the time your ready. We can frag you a few of them ,,,, dont really have anything that would help in the running of a small swimming pool salt water tank for you , but we can frag some stuff for ya !!!!

Hey thanks everyone. Paul i will call you. I am now looking for a 500-675g tank. My 400 did actually get tempered in the fire, i just touched it with a dead piece of coral and the dang thing exploded! Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers. My family is doing great and the house will be rebuilt so it couls have beeen a TON worse. It really is over whelming to have to replace 38 years of stuff in a short time like this...One good thing is that i am going to actually build the reef tank of my dreams now, i always wanted 675g...but it is gonna take several years to get the tank to even close to what mine was. Thanks to all you guys and gals who sent me pics of my tank, they have really helped with getting the contents right. I will look all you up come June (I hope) for some sand frags and MACRO algea as my fuge died too. I lost my pipe fish and mated pair of sea horses...tons of stuff. One word of advice to everyone, have a DETAILED record of what is in your tank and UPDATED IT often. I knew what was in my tank for the most part, but as i traded and stuff, i kind of let down on my record keeping as i got more and more frags. I can tell you the PH in my tank from 10 years ago thanks to the data logging, however i cannot tell you all the corals in there from 2 months ago!

Well I wouldn't think it would be copper to worry about. I would think of the fumes from others in the house that could be in the tank as the items in the room around the tank. Carpet, drapes, plastics, you name it and the depletion of oxygen replaced with some addition of toxic gases. Plus any fine dust from ceiling ( plaster) . So sorry to hear of your loss. That is something that should prompt everyone to check and make sure your wiring and smoke alarms are working . Also- check to make sure outlets are not overloaded!

Again i cannot stress ENOUGH to check you insurance policies on your homes. Also MAKE SURE you have REPLACEMENT VALUE on your stuff, NOT actual cash value. This way you can replace your stuff with the insurance paying for the complete cost, and not just giving you $100 for a 5 year old tv. Also make sure your policies read "THE SAME OR BETTER" when it comes to your content stuff. And also pay a little more for a larger insurance policy, as you never think you will use all your insurance, but when you need to, TRUST ME it is better to have too much insurance then not enough!!

Just curious, did your insurance specifically cover the loss of the aquarium and equipment? How about inhabitants?

I carry a rider on mine that covers any damage in the event the tank goes. However, I am not sure if it would cover the tank and equipment itself in the case of a loss. Guess I will be making a call Monday am.

Serpent, My policy covered everything, just in different ways. Anything NOT attached to the structure of my house is covered under "CONTENTS", and anything that IS ATTACHED to the structure of the house is covered under "structure." Basically if you can take it with you when you move, it is contents, if you cannot take it with you when you move, it is structure. My tank is built into my wall, hence structure for the tank, stand, lights. everything else is contents as i would take it with me when i move. Now the plumbing gose for structure as it is considered structure. I hope that helps.
