help ordering a regal angel

LA sells regal angels from vanuatu, fiji, and indonesia on their standard website. i am not familiar at all with these differant regions. i do know that getting a red sea regal is the way to go if possible, are any of these locations in the red sea? thanks!

None of those are in the Red Sea rgentry123.

When LA/DD sells stuff from the Red Sea it will literally say "Red Sea." Often not more specific than that.

anyone ever have experience ordering from their standard site? i know DD is top notch but debating on whether or not to order from the regular LA site.

I wouldnt hesitate to order from the regular site. I would stay away from the Indo if at all possible as the other regions fish are usually healthier.

I would recommend viewing this particular Angel eating before purchasing one. I bought one & watched it starve to death over a 2 week period & tried everything under the sun to get it to eat, including clams in the shell. Not an experience I will do again.

i have order a number of fish from the LA and the DD website. Sometimes the deal on LA is to good to pass up. The fish that i have gotten from both sites are top notch. how ever i have never ordered a potentially finicky fish like the regal angel. I have at time had 2 regal angels at one time in different times, one lived 6 years the other 5 years.

In my experience i and the store that i used to work for has had better experience getting Regal angels from the Marshall Islands to eat best, however the Red Sea Regals are by far prettier, (brighter bolder coloring).

I share the same sentiment and my experiences been from DOA to dying within few days to a month. One time I got 3 in hoping maybe just one will survive but one by one they dropped. Personally I'm more concern with getting a healthy specimen specifically ones that are caught with good practices and not as concern about it not eating. If we are patient and offer enough different type of food finicky eaters will eventually be weaned into prepared food but you must start out a healthy one to begin with. If you think about it the Indo ones are not that expensive yet we don't see them that much at lfs.

ok, thanks for allthe replies everyone. i'll mill it over and decide what im going to do. the one that is available is from vanuatu fwiw. so maybe not as bad as indo but not as good as red sea i guess.

Before going into locations of Regals I would ask the question if you are ready to take on such a finicky and difficult fish? What type of QT? Meds on hand? What other fish are in the tank you plan to place it? Do you have experience with angels?

That being said you can get some nice Pacific specimens out of Marshal, Fiji and Vanuatu. I think Indonesia is hit or miss, but if it is from LA then probalby good since they will most likely come from Quality Marine. The yellow belly is the Indian ocean variety and can come from not only the Red Sea.

Either way this is not an easy fish and should only be purchased if you are ready for it.

I agree. I kept one for more than a year before selling it. Not an easy fish by any stretch of the imagination.

In general, I have been happy with fish originating from Vanautu

i appreciate the concern but have read up quite a bit on these fish. i know the the biggest hurdle intially is going to be getting them to eat. i do have a qt setup now, right now it has pvc but its all being replaced with LR from established DT as this will give the angel somthing to peck at if i cant get it to eat right off. im planning to leave in it qt until i can get it eating prepared foods aggressively then move it to the dt. the biggest hurdle in my DT is going to be my yellow tang but it has never shown aggression before. if it does though im prepared to move it. i also do have experience with difficult fish and finicky eaters(leopard wrasse) and have been successful with them. again, appreciate the concern and think it's important to make sure each hobbyist knows what they are getting into especially when trying diifcult fish.

Looks like you're from Fredericksburg, take a trip up to Blue Ribbon Koi in Manassas or up to Fins and Feathers in Ashburn. They get regals in and you can watch them eat there. I have one from Blue Ribbon Koi that is a yellow belly and also a blue belly from a now closed store in Reston. John at BRK has a good relationship with Copps and has a hand in some of the fish he brings in. If you let either owner know you're looking for a specific fish, they'll help you out a great deal (talk to Sean at F&F). You might want to consider WAMAS as well as periodically someone sells their regal, but that's not very often!

I would also order from Vanautu.

I'm curious why you can get a Red Sea Semilarvatus but can't get a Red Sea Regal?

Weird isn't it? Try getting an Apolemichthys xanthotis...

But just curious as to where you even see regals for sale on Liveaquaria?? :rolleye1: I can search for them but they aren't even listed as part of the site, right now, and when I searched for them none where in stock...
