help ordering a regal angel

But just curious as to where you even see regals for sale on Liveaquaria?? :rolleye1: I can search for them but they aren't even listed as part of the site, right now, and when I searched for them none where in stock...

You literally have to be on their 'in-stock email notification' list to see them because they sell out just like that...you can't snooze on this one. :)

i appreciate the concern but have read up quite a bit on these fish. i know the the biggest hurdle intially is going to be getting them to eat. i do have a qt setup now, right now it has pvc but its all being replaced with LR from established DT as this will give the angel somthing to peck at if i cant get it to eat right off.

Good. I would highly recommend having Prazipro and treating the angel (flukes and internal parasites.) Also, it is a good idea to first do a FW dip in a clear container when you first get it so see if anything falls off. Angels are notorious for having flukes and it often will keep them from eating and by the time you realize they have flukes it may be too late.

ok. i will do the FW dip when it comes in. how long do you normally dip for? this is a method i havent ever tried and definately want to make sure i do properly on such a delicate fish. i do have prazi on hand so good to go there. when you do your FW dip do first acclimate the fish to tank conditions and after it settles in then do a FW dip or take it out of the bag and then FW dip?

so my little guy has settled into his qt tank now pretty well, he found a nice cave i had setup for him in the lr and is currently hiding out from me :D im gonna try and feed him for the first time today so keep your fingers crossed!

Just wondering how your Regal fish worked out and what did you feed it from the beginning. I'm thinking about getting one but I hesitate to put it in my sps tank.

Thanks

I would recommend viewing this particular Angel eating before purchasing one. I bought one & watched it starve to death over a 2 week period & tried everything under the sun to get it to eat, including clams in the shell. Not an experience I will do again.

+1
Same experience although mine is still alive after 7 weeks; eats some foods but very little. Mine was from BZ in LA.

I stated the same under your post in "Reef Fishes".

well my guy is actually not doing too bad, i have gotten him eating clams on the half shell, not prepared foods yet but i'll take it over nothing :D i am seriously considering moving him to the DT to see if watching the other fish in the tank eat prepared foods floating in the water column will turn the light bulb on. like to know what others thoughts are on this. let me know what you guys think..... DT or QT?

If the Regal is eating live clam then it's definitely no rush in putting the fish in the DT. I would highly recommend getting the Regal eating prepared food before putting it in the DT. It took my 4.5" Regal 25 days to even nip and spit brine and mysis. I think it was a week later it started eating pellets in the QT and ever since it's been eating pellets as its main diet in the DT.

How do you guys feed your angel? Do you go to the market and just buy fresh clams? Do you wash them slice them up or just stick them in the tank. I have a Yellow belly Angel coming tomorrow and I have all kinds of prepared foods ready but no clams. Does your other fish eat the clams as well?

I go to our local supermarket and buy clams at the fish counter.I then freeze them and use one at a time bye thawing them in water. Then i put them in the qt tank with the fish.I try and ween the fish off of clams before they ever hit the display.

storebought. i dont freeze though. i live within about 2 mins of a wegmans so i can get fresh clams pretty easily. all i do is crack open one half of the shell so the clam is on a half a shell and just make sure any little shell fragments are off of the clam itself before i serve it to my angel

so...regal update...he has starting going after prepared foods in the water column!! this is really a good sign. he's not exactly eating voraciously yet but he is eating from the water column so this is a big step i think. also, and i know i'm going to flamed for this, but against recomendations i put him in the DT. i do think this helped him start eating though, i thought that he would get freaked out being in a new environment but within hours(not days!) he started picking at food from the water column with the other fish at feeding time. i know this presents a problems if he starts to show signs of parasites or other illness but so far i havent noticed anything to indicate that yet(i did a freshwater dip after he was initially acclimated and saw nothing falling off, he also hasnt really shown any sort of odd or erratic movements). I do plan to start feeding a medicated food once he is eating aggressively so i HOPE that will take care of anything he may have internally if there is somthing present. keeping my fingers crossed.
