itss... hailing and if my car survives the pourdown ill be happy but i dont know if the power wont go out...it might any minute it almost ALWAYS does in this neighborhood.

wind is so strong it might tare down a few trees too.

any advice i should have incase the power goes out for an hour or two?
for the tank i mean...its a 75 gal with fish and a very few corals....

any advice would be welcomed.

you can always buy more fish and when the power went in my house because of a storm I had to just wait till the power came on

Keep the water moving as much as you can. Use a battery operated powerhead or you can manually take water out of the aquarium and pour water back into it, Use a piture or a bucket. This manually creates aeration and gas exchange. Good luck.

If the hail is softball size or larger run outside as fast as you can and take yourself out of the gene pool!

I am just kidding of course! I ran into this once in Oklahoma. I had just parked my car and I could see the hail storm coming my way. The house was about 200 feet from where I was parked and I decided to run for it! BAD IDEA! I got beat up and had some nice bruises the next day though it was only about baseball size hail. I was a kid at the time and tried to "save" one the hail stones in the freezer but the thought of it evaporating didn't occur to me.

Keeping the oxygen in the water is the most important thing as noted above. You can take buckets of it out and pour it back in or add a battery operated air pump or a powerhead on a computer ups backup.

Temperature is the next most important, however, hopefully at this time of year, the temp. inside your house is Ok. If it gets too cold, wrap the tank in a blanket to conserve heat. If it gets too hot, there is not much you can do without a generator to run fans.

If you don't have any battery operated air pumps, acomputer back up ups unit or a generator, you may want to pick something up after this is over.

Good Luck!

Your tank can go hours with out any power with no problem.

If the power stays out for 8+ hours then you will need to get a battery power-head or a generator.

Many times, but not always. My 55 tripped a breaker and I lost several fish from lack of oxygen pretty quickly.

Sounds like you need more water circulation in your tank to increase oxygen levels.

I wouldn't recommend anybody testing that theory.

OMG, it can't be that bad. You are still here, take cover. The heck with the tank.

sadly its like a meth addiction...ill cover the tank before ill take care of the leaky roof and the flooded basement:D

THANKS EVERYONE! the power stayed on!!!! WOOO!! the internet and tv went out tho and the kitchen ceiling started to drip trough the light fixture...same as my bedroom :(

also i noticed a few lines of water coming in trough the wall in the corner of the basement....and i live on a pretty big hill.

the yard was full of ice....it kinda reminded me of winter but the hail was only about the size of a penny thank god.

the tank stayed up and running and im on pot and pan layout detail

UGH!

Alex, a word of advice. Chill, its not that serious. I know you are young, but life is alot more important. I had a similar situation about a month ago. Bad storm here in the Midwest. Power lose for 6 hrs, no back-up (every year i promise myself to buy a generator). Roof damage, basement flooded and emergencies at work. Sad to say, the tank came in last. BTW, lose nothing and gained some GHA.

Consider buying a battery-operated air pump with an air stone and just drop it into the main display.
If you want to go all out, then get the biggest UPS backup power supply you can afford and run your main return off of it.

Here's some good reading on the issue.

I also had the same question years ago and didn't believe the what other people said. (they said a tank can go a long time with-out power).

Over the lest few years I have experienced power outages which have lasted up-to 48 hours.

For the small outages (less then 8 hours) I did nothing, and everything was fine, for the longer one's I hooked up my generator and all was good.

Also ask yourself one question.... How do they ship fish & coral over night, and some times 2 days with-out dying.

BUT....... with that said everybody's tank is different..

VERY good point dave and thank you for the insight...i have no prior experience with a tank in a power outage and i was under the impression that things would start gasping for air and die in half hour. im glad to learn atleast its not THAT bad

thank you :)
