Help save my blue hippo tang

I recently got a blue hippo like a week ago and yesterday I noticed white spots on it and I think is ick...all the other fish look fine and I read that blue hippos are prone to ick and do noy want to lose it...I marinate the food in garlic and been putting marine max ich treatment but don't see an imptovement...WHAT ELSE CAN I DO...ANY IDEAS WOULD HELP..THANKS

Please read through the stickies at the top of this forum. There are only three methods to get rid of cryptocaryon (ich): copper, tank transfer and hypo. Garlic does nothing for the disease. I don't know what Marine Max is, but unless it is a copper treatment it won't help either.

I'm new to the hobby so I don't really know the methods...can you please explain how to do the salinity method...marine max is a ick prevention regimen that my lfs store said it would help but it isn't and it isn't copper based.

Take your tang out and put him in a quarantine tank, Buy some quick cure and treat him and if your tank is FOWLR i suggest to "nuke" it . This has worked great for me in the past. Also, if you have coral put your coral and inverts in a tank that you will not be putting quick cure in. It worked magic for my blue hippo when he had white spots. treat now before it gets too late.
In my experience i have had trouble with coppper and i advise agaist it unless you are more experienced.

I wouldn't recommend hypo-salinity, personally. It requires a great deal of precision and the margin for error is very slim. Copper-based medications like Cupramine have a wide range of effectiveness and are fairly easy to dose if you follow the directions and test daily. You cannot treat your display tank with Cupramine (or any copper medication); you need to move your fish to a dedicated quarantine/hospital tank and treat there. There are a number of stickies at the top of this forum that can help you carry this out.

Quick Cure will not treat cryptocaryon...it is a good medication for brooklynella, however.

You need a hospital/quarantine tank. You cannot cure ich, or prevent it, in your main tank. Most folks who get into this hobby without quarantining new fish don't last long. All of your fish need to be in a HT/QT while your DT left fishless for 10-12 weeks. Have you done any reading on this great hobby? Although our forum is great; there is a lot of basic knowledge and good books still have a valuable place in the world. Any decent book on our hobby will stress the importance of quarantining new fish.

So lets say I get a qt tank and place my blue hippo there till it gets better, what should I do with the rest of the fish in the display tank that don't show any sign of ich. Any recommendations for a specific medicine that has work for you guys before. I did some research but when I went to my lfs the guy said I was gonna be ok without one for now. My husband and I asked the guy to tell us everything we need to be succesful in the hobby and he said a qt tank wasn't of big importance. I guess he just cared about making money from selling us the fish as soon as possible. So all I would need for a qt tank would be an empty tank, heater and powerhead to create flow anything else that is essential for the qt tank...thanks a lot guys

You need to treat ALL fish from the DT. All have been exposed. I prefer Cupramine, personally, but am also becoming a fan of tank transfer for treatment.

I have 2 clownfish, one blue jaw trigger, one yellow tang, 2 damsels, and 1 foxface rabbitfish in my dt how big of a qt would I need and what are the essentials for a qt??? Gonna go to the lfs after work and see if they carry cupramine.

Your qt can be as simple as a large rubber maid tote with a powerhead and heater. You will need to do daily water changes to keep ammonia down. Since you now have ich in your tank it should be fishless for at least 10 weeks.

Depends...how big is the tang, trigger and rabbitfish? If they are still small, you can probably get away with a 29g.

Yea they are still small...the biggest one is foxface and he's like 2 1/3 in..and about the water changes are they full or partical.

I did 50%; but I did hypo. You have to make sure your replacement water has the same level of copper. Make sure you get a copper test that is compatible with whatever med you buy.

And make sure you don't use any ammonia detoxifiers (Prime, AmmoLock etc.) when you are medicating with copper. These agents make Cu medications extremely toxic to fish. Just keep an eye on your ammonia and do partial water changes as needed (I usually do 30%).

Today I finally got a qt tank. I think is like 20 gallons I also got that cupramine med you guys recommended..the qt tank has a heater an air pump and some rock is that fine or do I need something else? Lets hope this works and they all survive.

There's like 7 other threads directly above yours(stickies) that will tell you exactly what to do.. All you gotta do is read and follow directions. Pick one and stick with it.. I would spend a lot of time reading stickies in this forum for your issue then go over to the new to the hobby forum and read those stickies as well.. Good luck and hope it works out for you and your new addition..

Best advice for me to give is always double check advice given when it comes to your tank and it's inhabitants =). Especially when it comes from someone you just met trying to sell you stuff p)..
