Hello!

Little starfishes are taking over my tank. Does anybody knows any reef safe animals that can take care of that for me? I dont live at home now so I only check on my tanks once per 2 weeks. Everything is on auto.. the light the food and etc... therefore I think i need something that requires little care. Right now in the tank I have a spider crab, giant turbo snails, a fire shrimp, a clow fish, salfin tang, squarrel fish, damsel, and a snowflake eel. I just lost my beloved Emperor fish due to icks :(

so anybody got any suggestions? please let me know :) each time i came back the starfish seems to be more and more =[ lol so I think i need something to take care of it for me.. lol

thanks alot guys =]

Do they resemble either of these?:

The first is an Asterina star, the second is a mini brittle star. Neither should be a problem.

looks like an asterina starfish...

some say harmless...

some say evil...

i say hevil...

could be bad...could be good...

they havent done anything in my tank...except go flying when i clean my glass! :D:D:D

i got asterina star... they havent done anything bad... itz just that they dont look good when they r all on the glasses you know? I think imma try to keep it under control... cuz itz going wild in my tank right nwo!! lol thanks alot guys i really appreciated it!! =]

LOl is there fishes out there that eat these? I had a pair of Harlequin shrimps before... and they were absolutely tight. But one afternoon the tragedy started.... I was siphoning the water out... and some how the tubes got too close to the male shrimp and suked it right in there..... I discovered its body in half 10 sec after it was suked in the bucket... I had him for 1 year T__T... and then cruel winter hits where I didnt have pre frozen seastars and I couldnt find any chocolate chip star... so the female starved to death. Absolutely nice shrimp to keep, I impressed all my family and friends because they never saw such unique shrimps before. But that was like 3 years ago.... and I got that pair for 23 US dollars... now i just dont have luck finding them anymore.... and I dont want to spend 22 to buy them online.... soo any other good suggestions? =D thankss

I have asternia stars too, i put 50 of them in my 10 gallon tank, and they just crawl around on the glass eating the algea off of it. my preference would be to have them roving the glass than snails in a smaller tank just because i like the looks of them. Granted, you'd need a whole lot more, but hey, they're small right?

Harlequin shrimp will take care of them and they are beautiful. They are really cool shrimp that only feed on the tube feet of starish.

I have literally hundreds of those asterina starfish in my tank. You can look anywhere in the tank and they'll be there. I think they've been eating my coralline algae, too. Are they harmful to anything else? I don't have any SPS in my tank, but I want to add soon.

understandable....get a harlequin . they are awsome shrimp that require star fish to feed on. most people can not keep these shrimp but in your case they will thrive. not expensive and they are very pretty. i would look at this pop explosion as a bonus cause i have been wantinga harlequin shrimp but not willing to buy starfish for em. these stars are not bad but the harleqiun shrimp would thrive. eventually if the population isnt growing fast the shrimp will deminish the pop to death and eventually would starve. this is the only concern with adding one or hell in your case a few. no worries

Wow, that fish line up you have sounds like a great meal for that snowflake eel you have, inverts also. I too would recommend harlquin shrimp but eventually your eel is gonna make a meal out of them and almost everything in that tank. Dont get me wrong I hope not, but odds are it will good luck!

lol i appreciate your concern.... but this eel is special =] i know this eel and he havent done anything naught yet.. LOL hmm
my emperor died somewhere during the night and the second morning i found out i threw it out. The night before it died i gave it a freshwater dip. Right now my clown is infected with icks!! arrr i hate them.... havent deal with them for over a year and now they r back T__T.... anywayss clown is in the freshwater right now... hope he survive... blahhhh

i think that if i get a harlequim shrimp itz gonna eat all the star fish then starv..... should i just want and culture the seastars longer lol so i can get one single shrimp? iono... i love suggestions! and it would be greatly appreciated! thanks =]]

wait he doesnt eat the fire shrimp? heck id try the harlequins then..it is a gamble. most eels attack new additons

well if you want your starfish issue improved i wouldnt worry about the shrimp...if he does the job you could remove him when the stars are gone or just let him be. if he dies he did respectfully ..... as he helped your tank. a dead little shrimp is no concern for spikes. hell be eaten in hours by the other clean up crew. thats my thoughts

I thougt clows cant get ich? Or maybe im mistaken. I know there was something that cant get it. I thought it was clowns due to the slime coating.

no clowns do get it. your thinking of other fish...for instance they say manderines are resistant due to coating. true fact but not with damsels (clowns)

I have them too. Just got them on some live rock. tons of em there everywere. They look cool regardless and i might get one of those shrimp in a while after the population gets a better hold on itself. I think a 150 would be able to keep up with one shrimp. maybe
