I contacted a cabinet maker to design a stand for my 65 gallon. The two items I don't have a lot of experience with are the paint and soundproofing. The cabinet guy suggested we use a 2-part polyurethane or automotive clear coat to seal the wood on the stand because it is the hardest type of pain (#6)? I read a lot of DIY stand threads and people used cheap enamel or whatever they could find at lowes - but I never saw any follow up beyond the initial painting job which always looks nice.
I also wanted to try and reduce tank noise by lining the doors and shelf surfaces where the sump will sit. Any suggestions on a durable sound dampening material? I thought neoprene but am really open to any suggestion.
Finally, on sound dampening for the return pump. I know a couple guys tried some sort of silicone or neoprene gaskets. If anyone has tried to quiet their return pumps if you could pass along what works.
Thanks
