help with equipment selection for 270 gallon

Sorry, but I don't like the tank location. This is far too busy a spot for a tank. All the constant rushing past of people will be upsetting for the fish, and there is no place to set up dedicated seating for viewing the tank. It will always be an afterthought in the corner of your eye.

That's a good point. BUT that's not how the room is configured. It's not really high traffic. The only portion that area leads on the right is the the boiler for the house's heating, and the equipment room. On the other side that you don't see is the theatre area. This location is in the basement. The high traffic Is upstairs, which is only me and my wife anyway Plus this tank is for viewing by standing position. If I wanted to sit there I would put a removable table with stools. Other than that. ... it's the only place in the house where the tank can go. End of story

Sort of have to agree with dave,m here Zack, not much room for a tank of that size there.

That area is 6x7 that's lots of room. Discussing the area which I decide to put the tank in my home is not the point of this thread. And derailing it doesn't make any sence..... but I'll draw a floor plan anyway.

Hey Zack,
I just completed a similar size build (72"×36"x24"). Running bean animal (1 1/2") with a single 1 1/2" return over the top. Return pump is vectra L1 which also supplies 2 reactors and eventually a 40b fuge or frag tank. Went round and round on a skimmer and finally settled on the ATB 1050a. For lighting I also wanted to use some of my existing lights which are Kessel 360we(supplemented by T5 retros) Ended up putting an 8x80 watt ATI sunpower over the tank and used 3 of the kessils in front angled in and will be putting 2 other kessils behind the sunpower. For in tank flow using 2 Gyre 150s and will be moving 2 MP40s over as I move livestock out of old tank.
Just thought I would share for ideas.

Dale

do you have pics and specs on how you ran your reactors in the return line... my reactors have a separate pump but i'd love to change that if possible

Before I start firing off equipment recommendations, what is the budget on the equipment part of the build? And what must the build include?

Just the stuff stated in the first post. Also for budget, anything short of royal exclusive budget lol I would rather buy a reef octopus sro 5000 before buying the same performance in a prettier case

how do you know it's the same performance? If that's the case then buy the eBay special for 29$. I agree they are pricy, but from what I've heard ppl say hey love them and when they leave the, to go to another brand a fair amount of them come back.

Because I've owned them? And I've seen others work. I feel it's an unnecessary cost. Reef octopus has been great. I don't see a difference besides the look and some of the materials used. Maybe it's a bit quieter but not by much, that's all in the pump. It still has rubber feet and pulls like a monster. So why spend Hundreds more?

ANYWAY I don't go the cheap route with anything. But I also don't spend anymore than I need to.

There have been a number of good recommendations here for Vectra lights etc. I'd probably get a smart ATO system and apex and a good dosing machine. I'm also making ATS a staple on my builds so look at a DIY or Turbo or SantaMonica. I just got an Aquamaxx em200 so I'd recommend their product. I'm not sure how their larger skimmers perform but the em200 is beast.

im not accusing you of going the cheap route on anything. sorry if it came off that way. i go the cheap route as i am in college. i was just asking if that theory applied to both ends of the spectrum and to other objects for the tank. there is no doubt that the RO work. it is proven that all skimmers really only remove about 30% of DOC's from our tanks to begin with. that being said all skimmers work because the market is so competitive out there.
like i said, sorry for offending you and accusing you of going the "cheap route"

i would share them if you could! that's interesting

Just a basic manifold.

Installed a 1 1/2" x 1" tee on the return line. Manifold itself is 1" with a ball valve for isolation and a union for maintenance. Used 1" x 3/4" tee with ball valve for future refugium or frag tank and 1" x 1/2" tees for the reactors with ball valves for flow control and 1/2" John Guest style fittings. 1/2" OD polly tubing to the reactors then manifolded the returns from reactors with isolation valves on each as well.
Excuse the wiring mess, just moved my Apex over from other tank and still getting everything hooked up and organized.
