Help with fish list

:wavehand: Ok so I'm looking for some advice with a fish list for my 25g cube (18x18x18)

the tank is about to get wet tomorrow, and after it cycles, i'm looking to slowly add some fish. It will be an SPS dominate system, with 26 lbs of dry rock from marcorocks, another 10 lbs of uncured Fiji Tokani.

Echotech MP10 for flow, Mag 5 return from the sump, with 2g fuge containing 3 lbs of LR and Chaeto.

The only fish that the wife and I are for sure on is a pair of black Percs. Other than that we are kind of lost. Maybe some Anthias, maybe a dwarf Angel (Potters), maybe Pseudochromis flavivertex (dottyback), we are just unsure. My last system was a 16g bow, that I only kept 2 Perc clowns and a RBTA with some LPS and Zoas. She's the fish person, I'm the coral person. Any suggestions will be appreciated! Thanks guys.

I have a 24g Cardiff with 2 clowns, 1 Blue Damsel, 1 Flamehawk. A couple of people have told me that I might be overstocked for such a small tank. Personally I haven't had any problems but the Damsel is big and wish I had a six line wrasse instead. So maybe the clowns and a six line wrasse?

im not a big damsel fan i have 2 in my tank from when i first set it up and now they are bullies and pretty much kill any fish that i put in the tank with them i would to suggest to stay away from them as they are meanies

I think its best that you stop at the clown pair. However if I were you I would probably try my luck too.

My experience with damsels and clownfishes is the bigger would pick on the smaller, not a good idea with such a small space. Not only that, clowns are themselves territorial.

Your best bet is to just have another benthic fish like gobies, which they tend to leave alone. Firefish is close enough with gobies. Or a docile fish that is not territorial but larger than the clown pairs (such as chromis).

Thanks for the replys everyone! Love the ideas. We do like the purple firefish, and my wife has added it to the possibles list. Do you guys think that the clowns would harras(sp?) a flasher wrasse? We both really like the look of them, I've never kept them however so I wonder on the level of care they require?

If you get a male flasher wrasse, when they "flash", they dash around. So I imagine they need a bit of travel length if you want to see them "flashing" properly. Never kept one in a smaller tank, nor with a clown, so I can't really tell you. hopefully someone will chime in. They are also jumpers.

Another question. I need to start getting a CUC figured out. I'm thinking Astrea and Nassarius snails. Can anyone give me idea of how many I'll need of each? Thanks.

You are aware you tank is 18x18? I would never put a flasher wrasse in anything less than 36 inches. Also the only angel I would feel safe putting in that tank is maybe a pygmy or flameback angel.

IMO your looking at pushing it to much. If you want SPS you probably want to have a low bio-load.

Good luck!

I kept a flasher in a 3 ft tank once. He didn't have enough room in there once he got going. I hate to disappoint your wife, but I really wouldn't do a flasher in that size tank.

You might get away with a dottyback in that size tank, and with 2 clowns as tankmates, I've heard they can be pretty aggressive in their own right. You also might get away with a dwarf angel. I don't know anything about their personalities, I don't keep angels since I keep corals.

I'm not sure there are any anthias that can be kept in a tank that size.

Thanks so much for the advice folks! We have added 3 small green chromis, since my wife wanted something that schooled together. I think we will be adding 2 black clowns at the end of November if my water stays stable, and that will be the stocking list for the tank. Do you guys think that is a pretty small bio load, as I feel that Charley was probably right with the small bio load comment.

Small bio load? 5 is too many fishes, even 3 is pushing it.

If you have good skimmer and refugium you can pull it off bio load wise. But heavier is your bio load, the worse it gets when something goes wrong.

And then there is aggression, 18" is not long by any standard.

When it comes to nanos, I stick to the rule that the fish load is dependant on territory, not bioload. In a nano, nutrients can be exported very easily. In a 25g tank, a 5-10g weekly/bi-weekly change can keep up with a fairly big "load". If the op plans on having a refugium, and maybe even a Skimmer, the bioload his ttank can support (with the water changes) can be fairly large. In the past I successfully had a 29g with 2 clowns, a chromis, blenny, and a six line. I currently have a 40g with 7 fish in it. I export all my nutrients efficiently and have very stable and clean water.

I like the stocking list, love your choice of fish, I have 3 chromis and 2 b&w clowns in my tank! I do think that is a good amount of fish for that tank. Be sure to keep up with the export of the nutrients though!
