Help with regal tang!!

Hi I apologise for quality of pics in advance. Got home tonight and noticed a white blemish on the rear of the tang. Under the skin there looks like a lump where the barbs are. Could this be a sting from my nem or a fighting injury? Or anything else?

Who is in the tank with the tang? What are the dimensions? Have you performed a water change lately? Are you over due?

Hard to tell from the photo - heck, hard to tell even with a perfect one! Hippo's are notoriously susceptible to skin problems, as well as loss of color due to environmental stress, nutrition, etc.

Good news is that it does not look like a parasite problem, so I'd look to environmental stressors as a cause of the blotchiness. Also does not look like an injury. Have there been any changes to your tank: new Tang, parameter fluctuations, etc.?

Hi parameters are stable and all as expected except phosphate which is always a little high. There is a small yellow and kole tang in the tank. It is eating well and acting as usual. The only change recently has been my nem split. Water change at least 10% every week. Ill try and get a better photo.

My Hippo gets white blotches sometimes when he gets excited. Mostly while I'm preparing food. Comes and goes rather quick though. Never last more than an hour. He's also gotten them from trying to steal food from an anemone. Most tangs react to their environment this way. Its only a concern if it doesn't fade quickly. If it last,check your water parameters. Also, Hippos need plenty of room to swim and lots of rock to hide to feel comfortable. You don't mention what environment you have him in.

It's in a 4ft reef. Lots of live rock and hiding places. I've had it about a year and a half. The white has been there for about 24 hours.

It's hard to tell, is that a 75 gallon? Have quarantined the fish?

OK, somebody has to point out that keeping a Hippo in a 4ft tank does not work in the long run, as they grow. You don't say how big the fish is but I started to have some issues with mine in a 90 when it got to be about 4 inches long. Necessitated moving up to my current 265.

Hi, cheers I understand that. At the moment It is about 2 inches. I have an lfs with a massive display tank that I have a good relationship with that will take it for their tank when it gets too big for my tank.
