Help with return policy on damaged item

I read on my order receipt that the return policy for damage items is 72 hours?

There is a large slash through the power cable of my eheim 1250 pump all the way down to the copper. There is also a deep cut on the bottom side of the product box.

It's deep and sharp enough to only be done by a large box cutting knife, I'm going to assume this was done when pulled off a pallet (because the knife went through the box all the way into and through the cable) but I'm guessing I will be told otherwise.

I used a key to open the shipping box. I unwrapped the rubberband from the power cable and dropped it in my sump. I havent touched it until today. I dont own a box cutting knife or any knife sharp enough to do this.

I only noticed it today because the cable got wet in the sump and tripped my GFI. :confused:

I've had this pump for over a week and I've already ordered a replacement. Is there any chance I can get this slashed one returned still?
