Help with stocking list

Hi all,

After a recent set of disappointing additions to my 90gal FOWLR, I am down to just the Blue throated trigger in the tank.

I believe that I have fixed the root of the problem (a very aggressive maroon clown killing new additions) is now gone and want to rebuild my stock.

I know that it is really a very personal thing to stock a tank, but I'm looking for some guidance.

I was thinking of the following in the tank:

Blue Throated Trigger (currently in tank)
a dwarf angel (croral beauty/flame/potters/lemonpeel etc..)
Flame Hawk
Tang (Heptus or Purple)
Some sort of Anthias?

Those are the main species I like but I struggle with the overall package. I like many of you out there, just want a "nice" looking tank. I don't really need rare specimins or anything.

I seem to strubble a little bit on what smaller fish I could put in the tank. Obviously the items above include a couple of fish that can grow large.

So what are your thoughts about the list above? Any additions or deletions?

Any help or insight you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

I would stay away from the lunar wrasse, very pretty but very aggressive fish. They eat corals and rearrange rockwork to boot.. I like the flamehawk and anthias idea, just make sure your tank is stable for anthias, they are not very forgiving of poor water quality.

I believe you would be pushing the Hep Tang in a 90 - they grow to over a foot in captivity. The Purple tang may be ok as a juvenile/sub-adult, but will grow to at least 6" over time. If you choose the Purple Tang (or any of the Zebrsomas ((Yellow, Scopas))) make sure they are the last fish in the tank. They can be nearly as agressive as the killer clown you got rid of. Another good choice for a tang would be the Kole - smallest of the bunch and an excellent algae eater with a more passive attitude.

I would bypass the anthias, they require multiple feedings per day, do better in small groups and as mentioned above very delicate when it comes to water quality.

I have a flame Hawkfish and love it. Great personality, he always looks at me with that "can I eat that?" look on his face. Nice addition as well because they stay fairly small.

I have started to like fish not only for their looks, but what they can bring to the tank maintenance wise. With that in mind, I would suggest a small wrasse from the Halechores family (Christmas is most common) or a member of the 6-line group (the Hawaian 12 line is stunning and the Mystery wrasse is beautifully colored and very hardy ((I've had mine for 2+years now))). Both of these will eat nudis, flatworms and pyramid snails should you keep zoos, montis or clams this could come in handy. The 12-line is not as aggressive as the 6-line can become and both stay smaller than the Christmas wrasse. Keep the tank covered if you choose a Halechores - they are proven jumpers.

I keep too many SPS and clams to want to try a dwarf angel, but if I had my pick it would be the Potters (second would be the Multicolor or a Multibarred if I could find one that was eating well).

These are just some suggestions. Hope it helps.

all great points everyone. Taking some of this into consideration, then maybe I would more likely have the following:

Blue Throated Trigger (currently in tank)
Potters angel
Flame Hawk
Purple Tang
Pseudochromis possibly Fridmani
A wrasse (6line/fairy/coris etc..)
Basic cleanup crew (snails/hermits)

If you need a clean up crew check out www.aquaticisland.com
They have a free cleaner package, all you pay is box fee ($10) & Priority 2 day shipping (9.95).
I got one this week from them, all arrived fine, no DOA's.
