Help with taking digital pictures of my Hippo...

Photography gurus.. Is there a trick with digital Photography where you can take a picture of a Hippo tang without a flash and not have him come out the color he is in this picture.. Everything else is pretty accurate.. Thanks in advance for your help...

Shoot in RAW mode. Set your white balance while post processing. Colors will be spot on.

what is RAW mode?

It is A digital negative that you can manipulate to make it look exactly like it does in real life rather than the shot you get form the camera. Case in point his hippo is pinkish in that pic but after post possessing the RAW formated picture you can make the tang look like it should.

Fatrip has the right idea. To be more specific, RAW mode saves the raw image sensor data from the image without applying the tweaks that cameras usually do (such a white balancing). This allows the photographer to control those things during post processing and (when done right) results in an image with accurate colors, even under high color temperature lighting.

For the longest time I couldn't even find a hippo tang in that picture...then I realized he is hot pink. lol
RAW is the way to go.

Although setting the white balance to the tank, you will get a nice clean color to the hippo. Though you wont have that crisppy bluish hue to the lighting. Just an FYI

That's actually OK, the tank actually has a whiter look to it... When you guys talk about setting the white balance, are you talking about setting the custom white balance on the camera and then tweaking it post processing via sofware? or do I only need to do one of the two?
