Help with tape cassette mod

I have a Resun DMS-400 12g that look almost exactly like the Aquapod 12. I want to do a cassette mod but I noticed that the intake screens are different. Most of the pictures for this mod show it on a Nanocube 12 I think. Do I need to cut holes below the grates to lower the water even more? The intake chamber goes all the way to the bottom and My Sapphire protein skimmer is getting fully submerged. If I use a stand for the skimmer it prevents the cover from closing.

This looks almost exactly like my tank.

This is the cassette mod on another brand tank. Notice how low the intake grates are. Does this make it so the 1st chamber in the back is almost as low as the bottom of the grates?

Just to clarify better. The lower the intake grates, the lower the water level in the back chambers? So if I make a cover to cover the vertical and horizontal grates the water level will be as low as the horizontal grates?

You don't need the tape case mod because your tank already has a surface skimmer. Just seal up the lower grates and the top skimmer will work fine.
