My daughter has a puffer fish thats teeth got to long and now it can't eat. She normally feed them snails and krill but not this time. She will be checking in throughout the day. Any suggestions on how to fix the problem? Thanks

You can google it...several articles. You will have to trim them by hand.

This is just one of them:

Stuff on the puffer forum too:

From another forum:

Be very careful with the clove oil! If you over dose, you could kill the puffer. The best way to handle teeth growth is by feeding a variety of live snails, live shrimp, frozen krill, clams, squid, crab, shrimp, etc. Freeze dried foods like krill will also help, but you need to soak them first so that they don't get too much air in your puffer's belly. Vitamin soak works great and helps you puffer get those nutrients he/she might not be getting. However, SAPs and dwarf puffers tend to still need teeth trimming. The other types should be able to be controlled with diet only, but it still happens.

Read this article on puffer teeth trimming. It's a great step-by-step on how to do it safely: http://www.thepufferforum.com/forum/...tal/dentistry/

For diet these two are great too: http://www.thepufferforum.com/forum/...-your-puffers/

In fact, that whole website is a great source of info and help about puffers. The forums are great too. When I need puffer specific info, that is always my first stop.

links aren't working

links aren't working

this is VandyTimes daughter......

For some reason the links you posted are not working for me. I do feed them a variety of "crunchy" type foods. This is the first figure 8 I have ever had a problem with their teeth. I went to the puffer forum and looked for dentistry and didn't really find anything. I don't want to do something that someone posts because some are bogus, but if I could figure out the right anesthetic and steps i might just have too. I have sent an email to buddies at WetWebMedia to see what they have to say.....but i am interested as to what the article said you posted

I have heard that MS-222 is better to use than clove oil....but i cannot figure out for the life of me where to get my hands on some of it fast!

Take 1/2 bag of silversides and blend them to a soft paste. Drain the excess water. Mix with 1 bag of Hikari Marine-S and mix well with a spoon. Put this mix in a ziploc and freeze. You can break a little bite and feed it to him. He will love it.

I Used to have Koi, a lot of big Koi, and they got a bacterial infection. I had to inject medication into each one (what a PITA) and I used clove oil to sedate them. It worked great. They would just roll over in the tub and then you can safely work on them. Its really easy to do.

It unfortunately isn't going well.....I cannot grip him well enough to cut his teeth (I think my hands are too big, after all he is only about 1-2 in). He is so small. I have had no luck with any vets. Neale from Wet Web Media told me it would be a piece of cake and that he and many people he knows have done it many times, but I just cannot do it. If I could find anyone with experience cutting puffers teeth that could do it that would be great. I tried again tonight, and I barely cut any. The cuticle nippers just kept sliding off his teeth.

i would use a dremel tool just have someone hold the fish for you. keep the fish & shaft of the tool underwater. keep the tool at a low rpm or you will make the water into a foam. this will be very stressful on the fish. you may want to medicate the fish 1st. hope all comes out well. i do not live local to the white house so maybe you could have one of the secret service hold the fish for you.

clove oil eh? what type of criteria do you use. the size of the fish. what type of ratio to the clove oil would be used for a marine fish? just being inquisitive.

i bought a really good set of scissor type nail clippers to cut the teeth after using clove oil, worked awesome... Do not use a dremel tool, the teeth are to close to his lips and you would really risk alot there... Get tiny freshwater snails and even a fiddler crab and they will love them, this will also naturally dullen those teeth. Good luck!
