help :-(

I housed both a nano-reef and red eyed tree frogs while in my dorm, so you don't necessarily have to stay out of the hobby.. just take it easy pretty much.

Not sure if your parents like plants but they could make the tank into a vivarium, which would only require misting/watering a few times a week and could house many more colorful jungle type plants rather than drab houseplants. Otherwise TV is a cool idea or anything you can use to cover up the hole :( .

example of well-done vivarium:

Liana..forgot one thing.. CONGRATS ON GETTING INTO UCONN!!!! [/B]

Thanks. :-) That is the one positive part about this thread. lol

Teen: I'm not positive right now, I'm basically just making this decision as we speak. If you'd like to be first on the potential list shoot me a PM or an email. :-)

Mike: I know it's possible, but i'm just not comfortable with it really. I'm going to have too much going on at school to think about keeping up with anything more than a betta fish unfortunately.

The vivarium is a cool idea. I'll certainly bring it up to my dad. Honestly I think covering up the hole is the least of his worries.

I wish. :-(

Unfortunately i'm dropping that too - I don't want the competitive stress and pressures assosciated with a varsity sport interfering with my studies...I can't be a science major AND a gymnast. I just can't. :-/

Liana, sell or give your corals and fish to the other members and do like Bill said and put the equipment into cold storage.
This way when you finally get out of college (Which is going to fly by) you'll already have the biggest expense taken care of.

I would wait to sell. If you change your mind down the line, I'm sure there will be plenty of prospects to sell to.

If you have any very rare/special corals, break them up and give them to people you know will be here in 4/6 years. This way you have a good chance of getting them back when you're ready.

I had my reef at my moms house years ago and even though she didn't mind taking care of it, it was still a burden. Never mind the floods that occured. :eek1:

Congrats on getting into UCONN!:D

PS I could be a good foster parent if you need.

Cheers,

HDTV .....oh yeah.....NINTENDO Wii loads of fun!

Liana, if you wind up selling the equipment & wait like Bill said, although it was in storage it still loses value, if you dont sell it soon after breaking down, might as well keep it. Like what was said tanks & MH lighting will remain the same, but those are the big ticket items. I would offer to house live stock, but there other people here that gives them a better home.

Congrats & Good Luck!

Bill + Dexter, I'm afraid to just store equipment, because I think it WILL lose value, and 6 years would be the EARLIEST I could set it up again - I doubt that I will be able to fresh outta grad school. And who knows if we're even still going to be using MH that far down the road? It could easily be 8-10 years before I can afford to set up a tank again...

The equipment isn't THAT much...obv. the tank(s), lights, heaters, pumps, oceans motions, RO/DI, skimmers, etc...

I feel like i'd rather just start from scratch in 10 years rather than dig up all my old (and by then, outdated...) equipment.

I hear ya.
Don't sell it for less then half it's store value.
You'll need to recoup some of your money, especially since you're going to really understand the meaning of poor soon.:bum:

My offer still stand.:)

True that. I'll shoot you an email and you can help me break everything down. :-)

And I really do need the money for college...now that you mention it. lol

I have a couple animals I think you could house. :-)

Thanks Warren :P Very helpful ;-) and then when i'm ready to set up a new 120 of my own i can come pick out my corals from your tank again!

Assuming I can go through with this I'm really gunna need your guys help...

I'll help you break down, just let me know.
We'll have the whole system down and out in one hour.;)
I'll need one other person, (Maybe your Dad?) to move the tank out.

Small change of plans...

Apparently, since neither of us really wants to part with the tank (or figure out what to do with a 4x2 hole in a brand new wall...) we've decided to change over to a SIMPLE SIMPLE SIMPLE fish only set up.

That still means I'll be getting rid of a lot though, and changing over the lights and whatnot.

Good idea? I think so...:)

Chris I was leaning towards that, but I talked with Bill + Ray this afternoon, and I think we're just gunna redo/convert to a FO, me and daddy both want to keep the tank up, we just can't do the whole reef thing right now...it's just too much. He can handle FO though, he works in the tank more than I do right now.

no only dexs tanks are in hypo salinity....lol

he means hypo salinity, low salinty to reduce the chance of ick. only problem is the fish will not color up as nice at such a low salinity. she has no ick or bugs etc in her tank so that isn't a concern.

Since your Dad wants to keep the tank going FO, I'd keep the LR and go FOWLR ;) It's easier than just going regular FO.
