To Reef Central

I only use gravity fed overflow boxes. I did a quick seach for starting a siphon. Maybe you will be able to find some useful information there.

ya thanks we got it started, but it took like ten tries and about 20 gallons of wasted water all over the apartment haha :D

also, the protein skimmer that comes with the system, doesnt seem to be skimming.. the system is built in, made of a water pump and air intake, thats supposed to set up a venturi effect, but no skim sofar, nothing at all in the cup, dry as a bone.. been running for about 18 hours now, it should have something. does anyone with any expirience with these systems, know how to make it work? or to optimize it? thanks so much!
chris

Well Chris,

It somewhat depends on whether you have any protein to skim. On a new tank, without much in it, there may be little, if anything, to skim Once you have a fully set up tank, there maybe bubbles galore. :D

As posted previously, I would try the adjustment, but if nothing comes immediately I wouldn't panic. Let it operate like that for a few days or a week.

Would you believe I was swept out to sea during Katrina? Lost at Sea wihout an RO/DI in sight. :)

the tank has been set up for about eight months now, 125gallon.. fish with live rock at the moment, starting the reef dig. 1x blue hip tang, 2x ocellaris clowns, 1x kole tang, 1x coral beauty, 7x blue green chromis.. i have about 50lbs of live rock sofar, its really expensive here in nj.. usually 9 dollars a lb.
My first skimmer worked amazingly, just a seaclone 100.. but it was too small for the tank, so i upgraded to the wet dry... still running my canister filter.. rena xp4.. with a 18w uv light and 1 power head.. 48" t5 lighting sofar.. also a 1-2" crushed coral sand bed.

the skimmer at the moment, is producing a little bit of foam, but its not strong enought to get pushed over, i guess, the baffle top.

another question.. im thinking about taking out the bio ball medias to use the wet dry as a sump.. that would add about another 5 gallons of water to the system.. good idea? or should i keep the bio balls.. what are the pro's and cons?.. the current plan is to set up a 20+ gallon refugium.. overflowing into the return pump chamber of the wet dry..

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated thank you!

i cannot push it any further down into the system.. it is solidly constructed. the water level is as high as it can go without overflowing, in the skimmer/intake section of the wet/dry. I'm patient.. i had the skimmer going last night.. and it ran for about 16 hours (with nothing in the cup or any foam present at all).. now since some minor changes that i did a few hours ago, i see foam in the tube.. but not overflowing.. it just sorta moves up and down between halfway overflowing and the base... i guess just wait.. but i did try to push it down further.

just took out the bio balls and raised the sump water level, added another 5 gallons.. anything on the skimmer? anyone?

Well, I guess you could add a bottle of Soy Sauce to the tank, it's loaded with protein, :D but I wouldn't get too concerned if the tank is looking good and everything is healthy.
